Tango Talks! (El tango nos habla)

El amor en tiempos de cobardía… Love in times of cowardice...

"Sorry, but I can not do it anymore" is one of the many phrases that we use as an excuse to stay in the comfort zone.

Maybe we think we're brave, calm with that cup of coffee and a slower-than-usual blink. Hoping that what happened in the end will not happen. When nothing does not warn of the looming catastrophe... when fear rules over everything else. When it becomes the refuge in which to entrench ourselves if life comes to say goodbye with its hurricane. So perhaps that’s why we hide within cowardice, trying to control the damage, without realizing that the wound of fleeing will be more persistent than exposing ourselves to love.

Tango reminds this to us once again...

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Alberto Marino (1923 - 1989)

People used to say "Alberto Marino is a luxury for tango". This exaggeration was due, probably, to its tenor register and the influence of the Italian school of singing that although had several tango vocalists, in the case of the  "Tano" Marino generated the feeling that he had plenty of voice for the challenge of the lyrics.

He used to go from a powerful  bass to a deep acute with the ease of the chosen, he had an unmistakable vibrato although he never misused it.  Detractors, however recognizing his ability, said that he was a cold singer lacking of a middle range register. The truth is that the great director Alfredo Gobbi dubbed him "The golden voice of tango".

In the early 40s, the Maestro Anibal Troilo heard him sing and makes to Marino an offer to join his group. Marino already had a verbal  agreement to go to the orchestra of Rodolfo Biagi, but accepted the offer of Troilo with whom he performed from 1943 to 1947.

For many it was his best time of singing, their versions of the  tangos Tres Amigos, (Three Friends) Fuimos (We Have Been) and Tal Vez Será Su Voz ( Perhaps It Will Be Her Voice), are real gems, among many others, of his contribution to the history of tango.

Torrente
Tango 1944

Castellano:

Solloza tu ansiedad...
También mi soledad
quisiera llorar cobardemente.

English:

Your anxiety sobs...
Also does my loneliness
I would like to cry, cowardly.
Anguish of playing with our sentiments
and suddenly, inadvertently,
lose our hearts in the torrent.
Groans our yesterday...
It groans with a tone of abandonment
remembering with pain
the night of that goodbye...
the night we lit with reproaches...
and love passed.

The goodbye...
the sad and the grayest song of love.
Yesterday...
the last and fatal yesterday’s final.
It was my contempt, my foolish contempt.
It was your bitterness, your dark bitterness.
Our selfishness threw us into the abyss
and we saw each other suddenly in the torrent,
the more atrocious
torrent of rancor,
brutal and cruel
that no longer offers salvation.

*The heart groans...
It rightly groans
to see what was left of that past.
Rose's perfume
silent glass rumor
and everything now is an abandoned nest.
The heart sobs...
It sobs like a child without love,
without shelter or dreams.
And the goodbye comes back,
the afternoon we were both cowards
and love passed.*

*This part of the lyrics is not sung, but it contributes to the tango’s message

Danced by Noelia Hurtado and Gastón Torelli

This is one of the pearls that we found when the Golden Era was about to depart. It is an interesting story that hides behind this tango!

Cátulo Castillo and Enrique Santos Discépolo were endearing and inseparable friends. When Discépolo died on December 23, 1951 it caused deep pain in the people of Buenos Aires  and also to his friend Castillo.

But, let's see, if the tango is from 1952 and Discépolo died in 1951. How can it be that the lyrics are attributed to him?

The day after his death, on Christmas 1951 his wife, the famous singer Tania, called her friend Cátulo Castillo to tell him that she had an unfinished tango by Santos Discépolo, her husband. Cátulo took the score, put it in his pocket and forgot for more than a year. Then he would tell that he was very ashamed of that forgetfulness.

Suddenly, one dawn, around 4 AM, Castillo was half asleep and felt that someone was dictating the letter in his mind. He wrote the lyrics in just a few minutes. According to Cátulo Castillo, it was the same Discépolo that dictated to him from the beyond. Discepolin didn’t  want to wait any longer, and pulled a bridge of love and friendship from the other dimension!
Nothing goes so hand in hand with tango, like making the goodness of a true friendship last forever.

On that topic, Cátulo Castillo died on October 19, 1975, at the age of 69. An urban legend says that an old blind man predicted the date of his death a few years before. Castillo, impressed by the prediction made record a medal to not forget that day. Time passed and it arrived on October 19. The morning began without news. Castillo was optimistic and vital. He had lunch with the family and they laughed at horoscopes and fortune tellers. Then he went to nap and did not wake up anymore. When his wife approached his bed, the first thing she saw was the medal on her chest.

¡A disfrutarlo!
And this, from then on, is already part of tango mythology... Let's enjoy it!

Mensaje
Tango 1952

Troilo Berón 1953 Version

Castellano:

Hoy, que no estoy,
como ves, otra vez
con un tango te puedo gritar...
Yo, que no tengo tu voz...
Yo, que no puedo ya hablar...

Mensaje
con que mi vieja ternura
de criatura
te está prestando coraje...

Yo, que a lo largo del viaje
sufrí tus ultrajes
en mi soledad...

Nunca quieras mal,
total
la vida ¡qué importa!
Si es tan finita y tan corta
que al fin,
el piolín se corta...

No te aflija el esquinazo
del dolor,
y si el amor te hace caso,
no le niegues tu pedazo
de candor,
que el lindo creerle al amor...

Bueno y nada más,
que siendo bueno,
no hay odio, ni injusticia, ni veneno
que haga mal...

Y hoy, que no estoy
me da pena no estar
a tu lado, cinchando con vos...

Vos, que me hiciste llorar...
vos, que eras todo rencor...

Mensaje...
Mensaje con que te digo
que soy tu amigo
y tiro del carro contigo...

Yo, tan chiquito y desnudo
lo mismo te ayudo
cerquita de Dios
English:

Today, that I am not,
as you see, again
with a tango I can shout at you...
I, that I do not have your voice...
Me, I can not talk anymore...

Message
with that my old tenderness
of creature
is giving you courage...

Me, that throughout the trip
I suffered your outrages
in my loneliness...

Never want bad,
total
life, what does it matter?
If it is so finite and so short
that at last,
the piolin is cut ...

Do not worry about the corner
from pain,
and if love heeds you,
do not deny your piece
of candor,
that the beautiful believe love ...

Good and nothing more,
that being good,
there is no hatred, no injustice, no poison
that does wrong ...

And today, that I am not
I'm sorry not to be
by your side, cinching with you ...

You, who made me cry...
you, that you were all rancor ...

Message...
Message that I tell you
that I am your friend
and throw the cart with you ...

Me, so little and naked
the same I help you
close to God
