Tango Talks!

Escuchemos.

When we have been hurt in love, sometimes we prefer not to be exposed to that person, and although deep in the heart we resist, we opt for the ostracism. The alternative title of this tango "No Me Mires" (Don't Look At Me) is revealing because it reflects our fear of falling again into the trap. Tango advises us well. Let's listen.

Acerca del director de la orquesta / About the orchestra director
Maestro Juan D’Arienzo, "El Rey del Compas" (The King of the Beat)

In 1935 , soon after formed the grand orchestra (had several previously without success) , Juan D'Arienzo bursts victorious in the disputed territory of popularity. I had just turned 35, one less than Julio De Caro -whom had his style located at the other end of the musical spectrum- who was a tango star since 1924 and D'Arienzo began to be when he started playing in the brand new Radio El Mundo. This does not mean, in any way, that D' Arienzo were a late tanguero . Like almost all the musicians of those times began in the tango since childhood.

A year later, in 1936, D' Arienzo, incorporated Rodolfo Biagi at the piano and following the idea of taking the old tangos of the Old Guard and recreating them with his unique sense of rhythm, generated a revolution in the dance tango. We could say it was the first revival of tango that already had lost popularity at the hands of the foxtrot which was a very popular genre of dance in Buenos Aires on those years.

The Tango "connoisseurs" belittled D'Arienzo, considering him a kind of tango demagogue. But D'Arienzo, as rightly pointed by many, made possible the revival of tango that has been called the Forties’ Decade, a decade that is for tango something like, mutatis mutandis, the Siglo de Oro was for Spanish literature.

Once succeeded with the new beat, which dazzled the Chantecler cabaret dancers and Radio El Mundo spread throughout the country , D'Arienzo began to theorize about himself, saying : "In my view, the tango is, above all, rhythm, nerve, strength and character. The tango of  the Old Guard, was all that, and we must ensure that it never will be lose."

Tu Boca Mintió - Tango

Castellano:

Cuando te encuentro, te ruego no me mires,
que tu mirada me aviva el dolor;
seguí tu camino, tu senda florida,
dejá que mi vida prosiga sin vos;

de todo lo que ayer fue;

*Me has hecho daño, mi vida siempre ha sido
juguete tuyo, pasión y dolor;
ya no quiero verte, quisiera olvidarte,
matar mi cariño tras otra ilusión;
English

Whenever I find you, I beg you not to look at me,
because your gaze revives my pain;
keep your way, your flowery path,
let my life continue without you;
I don't want one day finding myself myself sideways
and betraying my manliness and my honor.

I... that for you I shatter...
my peace, my family and my faith...
Today... only ashes remain
of all that I was yesterday;
I dreamed of a world of love and hope
the night that between kisses I could call you mine,
now I curse from the bottom of my soul
the distant dreams that your lips lied.

*You hurt me, my life has always been
a toy of yours, passion and pain;
I do not want to see you now, I want to forget,
kill my affection following another illusion;
don't want one day finding myself myself sideways
and betraying my manliness and my honor.*
