Tango Talks!

Childhood loves that did not go forward in time, memories that always remain, indelible marks on our souls... That school sweetheart we kissed for the first time, the first slap, the first love, memories that make us sigh.

In the case of this tango, our protagonist, is struggling to overcome the early death of his first girlfriend, and the tango addresses the topic showing all the sorrow, all the pain for what will not happen again... at least in this life. Let's listen what Tango is telling us.

Acerca del Cantor / About the Singer Raúl Berón

He was, for some people, the best orchestra singer in the history of tango, although other major vocalists, such as Floreal Ruiz or Roberto Goyeneche, rival him this position in the opinion of the connoisseurs. In an undeniable Gardelian tradition, tenor register and velvet sound, his peak in popularity coincided exactly with the period of greatest popularity for tango: from his inclusion in the Miguel Caló orchestra in 1939 until his withdrawal from the Aníbal Troilo orchestra in 1955, that period was the Golden Age!

The wide and varied repertory sung by Berón reveals his skill to understand every topic and mood of the genre, from the dramatic to the funny ones, whom he always interpreted with finesse and moderation, quite far from extremes. He was a warm intimate singer who turned around the circuit of the most elaborated tango and belonged to a generation of intelligent, refined singers.

After being with Caló and Troilo, another stage of importance in Berón´s career was that of his association with Francini-Pontier, an orchestra co-led by the violinist Francini and the bandoneonist Armando Pontier, both former members of the Caló orchestra.

In 1945, that new group was to premier Tango Bar, a café with a stage for the orchestra which would become a temple for the genre. Berón recorded with that group of advanced musical conception, between 1946 and 1949, a total of 13 songs as soloist, plus other three in duet. The most interesting of Berón´s discography with Francini-Pontier is “Y dicen que no te quiero”, “Como tú”, “Remolino”, and “Uno y uno”.

Como Tú

Tango 1948

Castellano:

Nació el amor entre los dos
recién dejada la niñez,
pero la muerte, fatal y terca,
te llevó sin comprender
lo que es amor.

Y yo no alcanzo a comprender,

*No sé siquiera dónde voy,
sin la esperanza de tu luz,
llegó la noche con tu partida
y has matado sin querer, mi corazón.

English:

The love between sparked
when recently left the childhood,
but death, fatal and obstinate,
took you without understanding
what is love.

And I can not understand,
how is it possible that without you,
still the rosebush giving flowers
and the thrush, still singing to love,
if you are not here.

Why did you give me your lips, my dear,
to later move away from my life.
I carry your memory that hugs me, like you,
It kisses me, like you, it burns me, like you.

Why did you give me your life, my sweetheart,
flower of absence, flower of a day.
I just hope my life will end,
just to get close to you.

*I don't even know where I'm going,
without the hope of your light,
the night came with your departure
and you have killed, unintentionally, my heart.

You lived only for me,
and I live only for you,
but I can not resist this torture
of living away from you, always without you.*

* This part of the lyrics is not sung by Berón, but helps the understanding of the message.
