Tango Talks!

It is said that loving without being loved is like trying to light a candle with an already extinguished  match. And the truth is we don't know very well why we do it, why do we insist on worshiping someone who doesn't love us. We persist and resist not wanting to realize the overwhelming reality that surrounds us.

We do not want to understand that love is not acquired in a vending machine. It is not enough to put a coin and press a button to get what we expect so badly and not wanting to accept that she or he doesn't love us anymore. Sometimes, there is no choice but to step aside, kill the false hopes and stop dying in life for her or him,  who now walks in other directions and in other companies. Tango does masterfully telling this in the sad story from poet Enrique Cadícamo, just to make us think…

About the Singer / Acerca del Cantor

Possibly, with Francisco Fiorentino, Ángel was the paradigm of the orchestra singer, to such an extent that when we refer to Ángel Vargas, we are inevitably reminded of Ángel D'Agostino, the orchestra leader of his greatest hits.

A singer with impressive personality, he is the symbol of the porteño (from Buenos Aires) tango phrasing in the 40s. Vargas sings as only in the 40s tango was sung. His phrasing was "reo" (outskirts style) and "compadrito" (tough man) but at the same time of an infinite good taste.

He had a sweetness which compensated for his small but masculine voice, he generated sympathy and was, above all, a charismatic singer. The team D'Agostino-Vargas was one of the most perfect mechanisms which tango had, only comparable to that of Aníbal Troilo with Fiorentino.

Angel Vargas died young and still without a very noticeable decline as interpreter; he was, no doubt, one of the major artists in our tango music.

No Vendrá
Tango 1945

Castellano:

Esperaré otro rato y veré
por qué demoró...
Quiero creer
que este nuevo querer
es mi gran amor.
Por no estar tan solo y esperar
fumaré otro cigarrillo más.
Pero algo hay que me hace pensar
que no vendrá...

No vendrá.

No vendrá... Pero igual pensando en ella voy.
Ya por hoy no la veré
me lo dice la postrer
campanada de un reloj.

*Yo presentí que no iba a venir
cuando ayer se fue.
Triste quedó, suspirando sonrió,
y me dijo así:
"Tengo miedo de quererte... ¡amor!
¡Tengo miedo de sufrir por ti!"
Y ese temor, lo confieso, mi bien,
que era de los dos.*
English:

I'll wait a little more and I'll see
why she’s late...
I want to believe
that this new love
It is the love of my life.
For not being so alone and waiting
I'll smoke another cigarette.
But there is something that makes me
think that she will not come...

She will not come.
I know that she will not come.
And although I do not want this waiting
I’ll wait a little more.

She will not come... But still thinking about her
I will not see her for today
The last tick tack of the clock
Is telling me that.

*I sensed that she’s not going to come,
yesterday, when she left.
She was sad when sightly smiling,
told me this:
"I'm afraid of loving you... dear!
I'm afraid of suffering for you! "
And that fear, I confess, my love,
is the same for the both of us.*

*This part of the lyrics is not sung in this version.
