Tango Talks!

I even seem to see them, when remembering that couple sitting next to me at that classy café at Posadas Avenue when suddenly she told him: “Up to here we endured the canoe of love and we will have to begin to know the pain”...

And so those words, her last words, remained in the air...  And he with his lost look and maybe both with a heavy heart understood that it is no longer possible to return to love, accepting this goodbye but knowing that memories will always be stalking them although destiny separates them on different paths.

Let’s don’t be misled by the title of the song or its romantic music…  Tango, again, is playing with our senses... Oh well!

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Roberto Rufino (1922-1999)

Listening to Roberto Rufino when he sang any of the tangos he had chosen for his repertoire, was to realize that the tango was slowly falling apart and that the words sprouted separately, without abandoning the ensemble that united them, with the appropriate force that they should have in context.

Rufino was that: a storyteller, an interpreter that perfectly knew which was the meaning of what he was singing. The destiny foreseen by his father had been definitively left behind when he quit high school in its third year, at the age of 15, and Tango would be his only destiny.

The year of 1938 will be key when Carlos Garay, Carlos Di Sarli’s agent, heard him sing the tango “Milonguero viejo”, (written by Di Sarli and Enrique Carrera Sotelo) he told the Maestro about it and the latter included him in his orchestra, with which he was able to record on December 11, 1939, the tango “Corazón”. Fame had already touched him with its magic wand and “at the age of 21 or 22, he had an unprecedented discographic record”, as the press of the time said. In fact, Rufino recorded, together with Di Sarli, forty-six numbers.

A capacity less known than that of singer, but anyway not ignored, was that of composer and lyricist. He is the author of numerous works, such as “Eras como la flor”, “¡Cómo nos cambia la vida!”,  “Soñemos”, “Los Largos del Pibe”, “En el Lago Azul”, “El Bazar de los Juguetes”, and many, many others.

Tango - 1940

Castellano:

No sé si fue mi mano
O fue la tuya
Que escribió,
La carta del adiós
En nuestro amor.

No quiero ni saber
Quién fue culpable
De los dos,
Ni pido desazones
Ni rencor.

Me queda del ayer
Envuelto en tu querer,
El rastro de un perfume antiguo.
Me queda de tu amor
El lánguido sabor
De un néctar
Que ya nunca beberé.

Por eso que esta estrofa
Al muerto idilio, no es capaz,
De hacerlo entre los dos resucitar.
Si acaso algo pretendo
Es por ofrenda al corazón,
Salvarlo del olvido, nada más...
English:

I don't know if it was my hand
Or was it yours
Who wrote
The goodbye letter
In our love.

I don't even want to know
Who was guilty
Between the two of us,
I don't even ask for uneasiness
Nor resentment.

I have left from yesterday,
Wrapped in your love,
The trail of an ancient perfume.
I have from your love
The languid taste
Of a nectar
That I will never drink again.

That's why this stanza
Is not able to resuscitate,
between the two of us, the dead idyll.
If anything I pretend,
Is an offering to the heart,
To rescue it from oblivion, nothing more...
