Maruja Pacheco Huergo (1916-1983) fue la primera en componer una pieza musical que logró competir en calidad melódica con lo mejor de cualquier obra del sexo opuesto. Se trata nada menos que de El Adiós, tango inmortalizado en profusa discografía.

Maruja Pacheco Huergo (1916-1983) was the first woman to compose a piece of music that managed to compete with the best melodic quality of any work of the opposite sex. This is nothing less than The Goodbye, tango immortalized in profuse discography.

Sobre la circunstancia y el momento, Maruja la propia autora, contó esta pequeña historia: “Ocurrió una madrugada de primavera a eso de las 2 de la mañana. Yo estaba en la sala de mi casa, junto a mi mamá que tejía. Improvisaba sobre el teclado del piano y, de pronto, ella me dijo: ‘Me gusta, terminá esa idea’. Y la terminé."

On the circumstances and the time Maruja, the author herself told this little story: "There was an early morning in spring at about 2am. I was in my living room, next to my mom weaving. Improvising on the piano keyboard, and suddenly, she said, 'I like that, polish the idea'. And I finished what I started."

Mamá agregó entonces: ‘Es muy sentida, qué bien si Corsini pudiera escucharla’. Y a los pocos días, cuando Ignacio Corsini la escuchó, por tercera vez consecutiva, comenzó a entonarla con precisión. Propuso presentarme a un poeta amigo suyo para que escribiera la letra. Así regresó con Virgilio San Clemente, quien al oír los primeros compases ya le surgió la inspiración y, sobre la misma partitura, escribió: En la tarde que en sombras se moría, buenamente nos dimos el adiós…”

Porque elegí esta versión / Why I choose this version

El tango El Adiós fue creado en 1937, y desde entonces fue interpretado numerosas veces, las mas famosas fueron Ángel Cárdenas y Hugo Del Carril (1938), Horacio Lagos / Edgardo Donato (1938), Roberto Maida / Franciso Canaro. Ángel Vargas / Armando Lacava (1954), etc.  Pero a mi entender ninguna expresando todo el dolor y la pesadumbrez con que lo hizo Osvaldo Pugliese con la voz de Jorge Maciel en 1963 (post Golden Age).

The tango The Goodbye was created in 1937, and has since been performed numerous times, the most famous were Angel Cardenas and Hugo Del Carril (1938), Horacio Lagos / Edgardo Donato (1938), Roberto Maida / Francisco Canaro. Angel Vargas / Armando Lacava (1954), etc. But in my humble opinion no one  expressed all the pain and sorrow like Osvaldo Pugliese did it with Jorge Maciel's voice in 1963 (post-Golden Age).

Castellano: En la tarde que en sombras se moría, buenamente nos dimos el adiós; mi tristeza profunda no veías y al marcharse sonreíamos los dos. Y la desolación, mirándote partir, quebraba de emoción mi pobre voz... El sueño más feliz, moría en el adiós y el cielo para mí se oscureció. Sobre el tiempo transcurrido vives siempre en mí, y estos campos que nos vieron juntos sonreír me preguntan si el olvido me curó de ti. Y entre los vientos se van mis quejas muriendo en ecos, buscándote... mientras que lejos otros brazos y otros besos te aprisionan y me dicen que ya nunca has de volver.

And in desolation, looking at you leaving, my poor voice broke out of emotion... The happiest dream died in the goodbye and the sky grew dark for me.
