Un Momento (A Moment)

Vals - 1951

Music: Enrique Francini, Héctor Stamponi
Lyrics: Homero Expósito
Orchestra: Anibal Troilo
Singer: Raúl Berón
This performance: Buenos Aires, 1951 - TK Records #S5057

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

There are times when tribulations arise in our lives and we can not avoid them. The first symptom that we are killing our dreams is the sensation of all that time lost in illusions of love that have to be only mirages. And we want to shout out our despair... This tango vals tells us the conflict this way...

Acerca del Cantante de esta Primera Versión / About the Singer of this First Version

Raúl Berón was, for some people, the best orchestra singer in the history of tango, although other major vocalists, such as Floreal Ruiz or Roberto Goyeneche, rival him this position in the opinion of the connoisseurs.

In an undeniable Gardelian tradition, tenor register and velvet sound, his peak in popularity coincided exactly with the period of greatest popularity for tango: from his inclusion in the Miguel Caló orchestra in 1939 until his withdrawal from the Aníbal Troilo orchestra in 1955.

Un Momento

Castellano:

Adiós, qué raro fue tu adiós
De espina y de jazmín
Como una cruz y una caricia.
Tal vez, no presentí ni comprendí
Que las estrellas tienen que morir
Con los rayos del sol.
Yo fui, un pájaro cantor
Y tú la mariposa
Que buscó quemar sus alas...
Después, la soledad, la realidad,
La noche cruel
Que pronto me envolvió...
Fatal...

Tu boca, mi boca, tu pelo y mi pelo,
Tus manos no tiemblan
No sabes reír.
Yo no quiero la historia de siempre
Vivir un momento y luego morir.

* Yo sé... que un día encontraré
En la aventura eterna
De mis pasos por la vida.
Tu voz que llamará y que gritará,
Que pedirá por mi regreso en vano
Y tal vez llorarás...*
Verás... qué triste es el papel
De mendigar amor
Donde no queda nada, nada...
Después... la soledad, la realidad,
La noche cruel
Que ya te envolverá...
Fatal...

English:

Goodbye, how strange was your goodbye
Of thorn and jasmine
As a cross and a caress.
Perhaps I did not pre sensed nor understood
That the stars must die
With the sun's rays.
I was, a songbird
And you the butterfly
Who sought to burn her wings ...
Then, the loneliness, the reality,
The cruel night
That suddenly wrapped me ...
Fatal ...

And again by the river, very close together
Your mouth, my mouth, your hair and my hair
And the moon, your moon, my moon
That yesterday wore us, today lays its veil.
I do not want a day deception
Your hands do not tremble
You do not know how to laugh.
I do not want the usual story
Living a moment and then die.

* I know ... that one day I will find
In the eternal adventure
My steps through life.
Your voice that will call and will scream,
That will ask for my return in vain
And maybe you'll cry...*
You’ll see... how sad is the role
Of begging for love
Where there is nothing, nothing...
Then .. the loneliness, the reality,
The cruel night
That will wrap you around ...
Fatal...

Bailado por / Danced by
Samantha Dispari y Santiago Fina

Castellano:

Porque tus ojos me huyen
Acaso no me amas ya...
Dime que lo haces tan sólo
Por ver si te quiero más...
Dilo, no ves que mi alma
Espera escuchar tu voz...
Entre canciones de besos
Me dices: “Te quiero, mi vida...”

Temo que ya no me quieras
Que ya no me quieras más...
Y es cruel tortura el pensar
Que no me amas, que a otro amás...
Dime que es fiel tu cariño
Dime que es mío, muy mío,
Que sólo me huyen tus ojos
Por verme sufrir.
English:

Because your eyes are escaping of me
May be you don’t love me anymore ...
Tell me that you doing this just
To see if I love you more ...
Say, don’t you see that my soul
Is expecting to hear your voice ...
Between songs and kisses
You are telling me: "I love you, my dear ..."

I fear that you don’t  love me
That you no longer want me anymore ...
And it's cruel this torture of thinking
That you don’t love me, that you have another  love...
Tell me that your love is true
Tell me that’s mine, really mine,
That only your eyes are escaping of me
Just to see me suffer.

Acerca del Autor y Director / About the Author and Director

Osvaldo Fresedo was born in Buenos Aires, in a family of comfortable economic position, which seems to have marked artistically: his orchestra, refined and aristocratic style, was the favorite of fashionable circles.

Osvaldo Fresedo and Ricardo Ruiz

Together here, the warm voice of Ricardo Ruiz and the orchestra of Osvaldo Fresedo with its fine, elegant and melodious seal. It is noteworthy that Maestro Fresedo incorporated unusual instruments in his orchestras: harp, vibraphone, cymbals. As a composer, Fresedo was prolific and successful, usually superficial, but beautiful, so beautiful.

Buscándote

Castellano:

Vagar…
con el cansancio de mi eterno andar,
tristeza amarga de la soledad
ansias enormes de llegar.

Sabrás…
que por la vida fui buscándote,
que mis ensueños sin querer rompí,
que en algún cruce los dejé.

Mi andar apresuré
con la esperanza de encontrarte a ti,
largos caminos hilvané
leguas y leguas recorrí.

Después que entre tus brazos
pueda descansar,
si lo prefieres volveré a marchar
por mi camino de ayer…
English

Wandering…
with the fatigue of my endless ambling,
the bitter sadness of loneliness
enormous anguish to arrive.

You will know ...
that I have gone through life searching for you,
that my dreams inadvertently broke,
that I left them at some crossroads.

My walking hurried up
with the hope of finding you,
long paths I basted
Covering miles and miles.

After I have the chance to rest
In your arms,
if you prefer I will go again
through yesterday’s road…

Estoy Pagando La Culpa (I am Paying The Blame)

Tango
Music: Roberto Rufino / Roberto Caló
Lyrics: Roberto Giménez
Orchestra: Juan D’Arienzo
Singer: Osvaldo Ramos
This performance: RCA Victor - 1965

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

This time the tango is telling us the story of something that has no fix nor hope and desperately sinks us in pain. Just a one way ticket.

This tango is masterfully sung by Osvaldo Ramos, one of the last singers of Juan D'Arienzo’s orchestra. He was, for his style and color of voice, the ideal singer for D'Arienzo, had power, good diction, passion and sentiment.

Castellano:

Estoy pagando la culpa
De todo lo que te hice,
La vida fue la revancha
Que nunca soñaste vos.
Y llevo dentro del pecho
Aquello que no te dicen,
El llorar por las cenizas
Que quedaron de los dos.

Hoy que comprendo las cosas
Aunque tarde me arrepiento,
Y me falta tu cariño
Que un mal día desprecié.
Ese amor que siempre, siempre
Me dejó el presentimiento,
De que nunca en mi camino
Miraría a otra mujer.

Quiero llorar y no puedo
Quiero olvidar y es en vano,
Si con sangre de mi herida,
Me está gritando la vida
Que estamos los dos a mano.

Estamos los dos a mano
Sin consuelo y sin perdón,
Pagando por ese orgullo,
Tanto mío como tuyo
Que lastimó el corazón...

Recitado:
Estoy pagando la culpa
De tanto como sufriste
Tal vez yo no supe nunca
Tratarte como debí
Fui rebelde y no entendía
Todo el bien que vos me hiciste
Y hoy comprendo aquella tarde
De lo que necio que yo fui
English
I am paying the blame
On everything I did to you,
Life was the revenge
That you never dreamed of.
And I have deep in my chest
What they don’t tell you,
The mourn of the ashes
Left over from the two.

Today I understand things
Although I’m regretting and it’s too late,
And I’m lacking of your love
That a bad day, I despised.
That love that always, always
Left me the premonition,
That never in my way
Would have looked at another woman.

I want to cry and I can’t
I want to forget and is in vain,
If with blood from my wound,
Life is screaming to me
That we're both even.

We're both even
Without consolation and without forgiveness
Paying for that pride,
Much mine as yours
That hurt the heart ...

Recited:
I am paying the blame
On how much you suffered
Maybe I never knew
How to treat you like I should
I was rebellious and didn’t understand
All the good that you did to me
And today I understand that afternoon
How fool I was

Maria Filali

Chapeau!

And should be interpreted with all the soul and passion that Maria Filali and Ozgur Karahan transpired in these three minutes of glory. Chapeau!

Te Aconsejo Que me Olvides (I Advise You To Forget Me)

Tango - 1926

Music: Pedro Maffia
Lyrics: Jorge Curi
Orchestra: Aníbal Troilo
Singer: Francisco Fiorentino
This performance: April 16, 1941 - Buenos Aires RCA-Victor 39299 39853

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!

Tal vez no. Escuchemos...

A message as valid as ruthless, when the status quo or better in this case, when the state of convenience doesn't want to be changed by one of the parties of the relationship, cowardly leaving aside sentiments and love.

It gives us a glimpse of an in-depth era' snapshot.. But... so many things changed?  Maybe not. Let's listen...

Te Aconsejo Que me Olvides  (I Advise You To Forget Me)
Tango - 1928

Castellano:

Recibí tu última carta
en la cual tú me decías,
te aconsejo que me olvides
todo ha muerto entre los dos.
Solo pido mis retratos
y todas las cartas mías,
ya lo sabes que no es justo
que aún eso conserves vos.

Hoy reconoces la falta;
tienes miedo que yo diga,
que le cuente a que tu marido,
nuestra íntima amistad.
Soy muy hombre no te vendo,
no soy capaz de una intriga;
lo comprendo si es que hablara,
quiebro tu felicidad.

Pero no vas a negar
que cuando vos fuiste mía,
dijiste que me querías,
que no me ibas a olvidar.
Y que ciega de cariño
me besabas en la boca,
como si estuvieras loca
sedienta nena de amar.

English:

I received your last letter
in which you said,
"I advise you to forget me
everything has died between the two.
I'm just asking for my photos
and all my letters,
you know that it's not fair
that you still conserving those".

Today you acknowledge the fault;
you're afraid of me saying,
telling your husband,
our intimate friendship.
I am very manly, I don’t  sell you,
I am unable to intrigue;
I understand if I speak,
I will break your happiness.

But you will not deny
that when you were mine,
you said you loved me,
that you will not forget me.
And blind of affection
you kissed me on the lips,
like you were crazy
thirsty babe for love.
