Tango Talks!
Surely most of us have had the experience of ending a relationship. And that ending is never easy, it often involves a mixture of feelings of frustration and failure, along with others of emptiness, nostalgia and loneliness. We cling to various subterfuges, not knowing how we will feel later...
But what is clear is that in a relationship there are never nor will there be any guarantees, this time tango talk to us this way...

In 1945 men wore their hair short, straight and flattened with the help of a fixative. The traditional product, the “gomina” from the Brancato company made on the basis of tragacanth gum, saw the market compete with the new “Glostora” brand product, an amber emulsion with a light perfume. And the success of Glostora was immediate, being used by all tangueros of the Golden Age. Its commercial motto was "the fixative adopted by the successful youth..."
No Culpes al Amor
Tango
Castellano:
Comienza aquí
La despedida sin un beso,
Termina así
En las cenizas del adiós.
Cayó el telón
Sobre la farsa sin final feliz,
Con el matiz
De la serena confesión.
No culpes al amor
Que pide y da ternura,
Lo nuestro no es amor
Apenas aventura.
No culpes al amor
Que yace en el olvido,
Si siempre me has mentido
Si nunca te he querido,
La culpa es de los dos.
Un día sentirás
Que estás enamorada,
Entonces tú dirás:
“No culpes al amor”
*Es tarde ya
Para los celos y el orgullo,
Es tarde ya
Para la escena del perdón.
Es el final
Sin una lágrima, sin un rencor,
Con el valor
De la serena confesión.*
English:
It starts here
The farewell without a kiss
Ends like this
In the ashes of goodbye
The curtain fell
Over the farce with no happy ending
With the nuance
Of the serene confession.
Don't blame it on love
That asks and gives tenderness,
Ours is not love
Just adventure.
Don't blame it on love
That lies in oblivion,
If you've always lied to me
If I have never loved you
Blame it on both of us.
One day you will feel
That you are in love,
Then you will say:
"Don't blame love"
*It is too late now
For jealousy and pride
It is too late now
For the scene of forgiveness.
It is the end
Without a tear, without a grudge,
With the courage
Of the serene confession.*
*This part of the lyrics is not sung in this version, but it completes the message of the tango.

Bravo!

Great performance, far from “professional” formalities and as real as life itself. As we Argentines say, tango must have passion, commitment and sincere freshness. For a moment I felt transported to a neighborhood milonga in my beloved Buenos Aires. Bravo!
Did you know that D’Arienzo was invited to play in Japan by Emperor Hirohito himself, and that there was a very particular story behind that invitation? All of this happened in the last century. Let's see how follows...
We already know that 1940’s Golde Decade of Tango began to languish after the military coup of 1955 and for other reasons as well, such as the advent of rock, the rebellion of new generations towards their parents, the new laws dictatorial to the detriment of tango, etc.
Baron Megata's exhibition - 1950's
But there was a country, loser of a great war, Japan, in which none of that happened. It all started when a Japanese aristocrat, Baron Tsunayoshi "Tsunami" Megata, met tango in Paris at the legendary cabaret El Garrón, in the early 1920s, becoming an excellent dancer and then a great promoter when he returned to his land in 1926.
Ahí Va El Dulce (There is the sweet) - Juan Canaro Orchestra - Instrumental
Historical first Tango's visit to Japan - Original performance 1954
Tango was spread, first among the Japanese elite and after the war among the entire population. The first Argentine orchestra to play in Japan was conducted by Juan Canaro in 1954, soon followed by many others, such as those conducted by Osvaldo Pugliese and Francisco Canaro.
But there was an orchestra that the Japanese wanted to receive and applaud in their land, that of Juan D'Arienzo. This reached the highest levels of government and Emperor Hirohito himself, in 1968, invited D’Arienzo to play. But the Master was reluctant to accept, because he was afraid to travel by plane.
Then the Emperor sent him a blank check through the Embassy in Buenos Aires, so that D'arienzo could put the amount he wanted. Faced with the new refusal, Hirohito offers him a warship for a 40-day trip, which seems like a long time. Upon learning of his second refusal, he proposed to send him a submarine, with which the trip would be shortened by 15 days. But D’Arienzo, who no longer knew how to say no, replied that he was afraid that Japan would get into another War, and that was why he rejected the Emperor's invitation to travel to the country.
Tango "Mi Japón" - Juan D'Arienzo Orchestra - Singer Alberto Echague
The orchestra finally traveled without him, under the direction of Juan Polito, and the success was so great that they returned in 1970. In gratitude, the tango “Mi Japón” was created and premiered on that occasion in the voice of Alberto Echagüe. Tango today is still very popular in Japan, which is the cradle of great musicians, dancers, singers and collectors (in the latter, the best in the world).

Tango Talks!
During the first three decades of the 20th century, in the fervor of urban change that transformed Buenos Aires into a metropolis, poetry, cinema, theater, and the lyrics of the tango repeatedly portrayed the path of “ muchachas de barrio” who, by taking to nightlife and the downtown cabarets, placed their stakes on a society where social ascent — limited yet real — was part of the urban experience.
Actress Olaga Zubarry in the film "The Naked Angel" 1946
For the most part written by men, the lyrics speak of these journeys in a tone of censure to condemn these young women who dared to question their place in the domestic world and the world of the barrio.
In our story, the now not-that-young protagonist starts a frenetic search of his childhood sweetheart through those dens of perdition, in a desperate effort to rediscover his lost love to save her from her hopeless fate. Perhaps somewhat overbearing isn't it?
Once again tango offers us an open-ended story, encased in beautiful and brilliant music. Has he found her? Have they been saved?
No nos dejemos engañar cuando la bailamos. Let's not be fooled when we dance it.
This singer born in Buenos Aires, had a beautiful voice, interpreted with personal phrasing and also knew how to express a sober drama when the thematic required that way. Practically, his entire artistic career was linked to Maestro Rodolfo Biagi with whom he made his most brilliant successes.
At age 17, he began his performances in different neighborhood shows and from 1948 in cinemas, in the so-called "live performances". It was an artistic practice implemented by a national law forcing the cinemas, in the interludios, to present singers, musicians, comedians, jugglers and the most varied artistic manifestations.
After the 1950s carnival dances, the singers Alberto Amor and Carlos Saavedra were disbanded from the Rodolfo Biagi orchestra, and were replaced by Carlos Heredia who had been with Gobbi and Hugo Duval, already with his stage name.
The singers remained together until 1953. Then, Hugo remained as the only voice of Biagi, until 1962. It is curious but explainable by the success of Duval, that of the 20 tracks recorded by the orchestra for the Odeon label, thirteen were with the singer, including two duets with Heredia, who as a soloist recorded two songs; five were instrumentals.
In the sixties, a very difficult time for tango, in spite of being tempted to follow his career as a soloist, Duval remained with the Maestro until his last performance, on August 2, 1969, at the Hurlingham Club, a month before Biagi died.
Hugo Duval and Jorge Ortiz were the emblematic voices of Rodolfo Biagi. In addition, they were the ones who recorded the most songs with him.
Mariposita
Tango 1941
Castellano:
Un bandoneón
con su resuello tristón.
La noche en el cristal
de la copa y del bar
y del tiempo que pasó...
Mi corazón
con su borracha emoción.
Y en otra voz, la voz
de la historia vulgar,
dice mi vulgar dolor...
Mariposita,
muchachita de mi barrio,
te busco por el centro,
te busco y no te encuentro,
siguiendo este calvario
con la cruz del mismo error.
Te busco porque que acaso nos
iríamos del brazo...
Vos te equivocaste con tu arrullo
de sedas palpitantes,
y yo con mi barullo
de sueños delirantes,
en un mundo embriagador.
¡Volvamos a lo de antes!
¡Dame el brazo y vámonos!
*Ni vos ni yo
sabemos cuál se perdió.
Ni dónde el bien, ni el mal,
tuvo un día final
y otro día comenzó...
Yo bebo más
porque esta noche vendrás.
Mi corazón te ve;
pero habrá que beber mucho...
¡pero mucho más!...*
English:
A bandoneon
with his sad breath.
The night in the translucent light
of the glass and the saloon
and the time that has passed...
My heart
With its drunken emotion.
And in another voice, the voice
of the common history,
says my common pain...
Little butterfly,
little girl from my neighborhood,
I look for you in downtown,
I look for you and I can't find you,
following this ordeal
with the cross of the same mistake.
I look for you because perhaps we
we would go side by side...
You were wrong with your cooing
of throbbing silks,
and I with my mess
of fictional dreams,
in a deceiving world.
Let's go back to what we were!
Give me your hand and let's go!
*Neither you nor me
we don’t know which one was lost.
Neither where good nor evil
had a final day
and another day began...
I drink more
because tonight you will come.
My heart sees you;
but I will have to drink a lot...
but much more!...
