Tango

This performance:

Tango Talks!

When somebody betrays us we are prone to accept that fate, but as time passes and the pain is unbearable we are capable of anything to avenge the affront, although love is now irrecoverable and life has no sense anymore. Tango already knew!

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Francisco Fiorentino
Cantor, bandoneonista y compositor / Singer bandoneonist and composer
(1905 - 1955)

Fiorentino was undoubtedly the archetypal orchestra tipica singer, a concept which synthetically describes the main feature of tango in the forties, where the singer was a member of the orchestra as musicians, in other words his/her voice was another instrument.

He was not a virtuoso, his voice was small and his diction confusing, but these features did not prevent his impressive success. His artistic life with Troilo lasted six years, debuted the 1st. of July of 1937, in the cabaret Marabou and split in March of 1944,

His personality, his taste and the permanent direction of Pichuco (Anibal Troilo)  resulted in an intimate singer of great warmth who knew how to move the audience, becoming a landmark in the history of tango vocalists.

Castellano:

O creés que he nacido pa' vivir temblando?

me encuentro perdido.
No ves cómo estoy!

English:

I don't know, but sometimes I would like to find him face-to-face, to see if he is able
to look at me when I question him
since he is of courage as you say.
Or you think that I was born to live trembling?
I am more manly than you know...
From today on, day and night I will be looking for him and you'll see me when I found him.

In sum, without her for what I’m good for!
Without her my life
it is not a life nor anything.
I don't know anymore who I'm...
In sum, without her for what I'm good for!
If my soul is wounded...
if there is no dawn
that found me asleep,
I find myself lost.
Don't you see how I am!

*I thought many nights not paying attention,
let him quiet, forgiving his action,
and I don't find a remedy; spent my hours clenching fists with this obsession.
My experience spoke. That is why until
now
I struggled to be strong, I didn't want to see.
And it is all useless, my eyes cries for her
I'll have to loose myself
for that woman.*

* This part of the lyrics are not in the Troilo-Fiorentino version. Can be listened in Goyeneche's version (below); gives closure and completes the story of this tango.

Danced by Noelia Hurtado and Carlitos Espinosa

Carpe diem!

Musicality, passion and dramatic pauses very much in tune with the message of the lyrics of this tango. What more can we say?  They make us part of the looming up tragedy touching our hearts. Carpe diem!

Te Aconsejo Que me Olvides (I Advise You To Forget Me)

Tango - 1926

Music: Pedro Maffia
Lyrics: Jorge Curi
Orchestra: Aníbal Troilo
Singer: Francisco Fiorentino
This performance: April 16, 1941 - Buenos Aires RCA-Victor 39299 39853

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!

Tal vez no. Escuchemos...

A message as valid as ruthless, when the status quo or better in this case, when the state of convenience doesn't want to be changed by one of the parties of the relationship, cowardly leaving aside sentiments and love.

It gives us a glimpse of an in-depth era' snapshot.. But... so many things changed?  Maybe not. Let's listen...

Te Aconsejo Que me Olvides  (I Advise You To Forget Me)
Tango - 1928

Castellano:

Recibí tu última carta
en la cual tú me decías,
te aconsejo que me olvides
todo ha muerto entre los dos.
Solo pido mis retratos
y todas las cartas mías,
ya lo sabes que no es justo
que aún eso conserves vos.

Hoy reconoces la falta;
tienes miedo que yo diga,
que le cuente a que tu marido,
nuestra íntima amistad.
Soy muy hombre no te vendo,
no soy capaz de una intriga;
lo comprendo si es que hablara,
quiebro tu felicidad.

Pero no vas a negar
que cuando vos fuiste mía,
dijiste que me querías,
que no me ibas a olvidar.
Y que ciega de cariño
me besabas en la boca,
como si estuvieras loca
sedienta nena de amar.

English:

I received your last letter
in which you said,
"I advise you to forget me
everything has died between the two.
I'm just asking for my photos
and all my letters,
you know that it's not fair
that you still conserving those".

Today you acknowledge the fault;
you're afraid of me saying,
telling your husband,
our intimate friendship.
I am very manly, I don’t  sell you,
I am unable to intrigue;
I understand if I speak,
I will break your happiness.

But you will not deny
that when you were mine,
you said you loved me,
that you will not forget me.
And blind of affection
you kissed me on the lips,
like you were crazy
thirsty babe for love.
