Tango Talks!

With love, with all the pain but without the courage or the strength needed, sometimes we shall ask the other person to banish us from his/her life, because we can not go on and on with that suffering. The mind rebels itself to the heart ... despite the dreary future that lies ahead. Tango is an oracle to which we must listen...

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Raúl Iriarte

Nombre real / Real name: Fiorentino, Rafael  (1916 - 1982)

He was born in the Buenos Aires’s very tanguero neighborhood of Barracas; his parents moved later to the middle upper class area of San Isidro. Maybe after Gardel, has been one of the tango vocalists most famous and requested in Latin America.

Since early age he was inclined towards music; he had a devotion for singing and guitar playing. He made his debut in radio at the early age of 17. He had a baritone range, an afflicted voice with special color, perfect diction and good scenic look.

After other orchestras, in the early 1943 he joined  Miguel Caló cutting his first record:”Es en vano llorar” (It’s in vain to cry for you). In the whole American continent his name was extremely popular. So much so that on the radio programs that aired tango music only were included Iriarte's and Gardel's records. His most polished numbers with Miguel Caló were undoubtedly the key to such boom.

Acclaimed and admired in all the places where he arrived at with his voice and pleasant way, he was one of the most important ambassadors of Argentine tango.

Rebeldía (Rebelliousness)

Castellano:

English:

With my hands red of squeezing the heart,
stifling a muffled cry of anger.
Rebel, like water in front of fire,
like the sea opposing the rocks, today I rebelled.

With your tyrant love that knows no reason,
rebel with my own heart.
I ask you to leave, please leave me,
go away away at once, it will be better!

I know I'll cry later,
that I will never forget you.
I know that every night without your laughter, without your voice,
How much I’ll miss your love!

But it is preferable to lose you
that remaining a puppet
just to see you.
No, please leave me!
Today my love rebelled.

With your tyrant love that knows no reason,
rebel with my own heart.
I ask you to leave, please leave me,
go away away at once, it will be better!

Majo and Rodrigo are displaying a particular "porteño" sentiment, sensual with superb musicality, combining the traditional essence of tango with dynamic elements of contemporary tango.

Tango Talks!

Sometimes we offer ourselves with our entire soul only to see that love is not reciprocated in the same way, then we must accept the consequences and have to live with that pain... ending up wrapped in the darkest of darkness. Not always time cures. Wise words of this tango.

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Roberto "Chocho" Florio

"Chocho" Florio was an emotional singer, passionate, rightly dramatizing the themes of his repertoire. He sang as a neighborhood kid without a major musical knowledge, but following very good advices he studied with many guitarists, to later continue with music teachers.

In the second part of the 50's he reaches its peak when Maestro Carlos Di Sarli is interested on him. His repertoire now encompasses great songs that were hits between 1956 and early 1958 including this great tango "Defeated", also performing at the famous cabaret Marabú at 365 Maipú St., the Mi Club at the 586 Suipacha St., many other famous clubs, LR1 Radio El Mundo and recording albums for the RCA Victor label.

It was an intimate, warm and delicate singer, with good intonation and distinctive personality, however remind us, at times, the “Pibe” (Kid) Rufino, who on the other hand, had a great influence not only in Florio but in many other singers.

Derrotado (Defeated)

Castellano:

Cuántas veces yo me alcé para gritar
Más el miedo de perderte me frenó,
Y de nuevo resignándome a mi mal
Busqué el embrujo de tu voz
Arrodillándome a tu amor.

Yo no acierto a comprender

English:

How many times I lifted myself to cry
But the fear of losing you stopped me,
And again resigning myself to my calamity
I look for the spell of your voice
Kneeling in front of your love.

I don’t understand
For what reason,
You got me tied in your life
If then,
When I gave you my heart
You were denying that love.

I burned in your love the best of my illusions
And I lost the hope in reacting,
And without faith, without your love, defeated,
Today I look back with sadness the moments of the past.

Without knowing why your love come back to my memory,
Unable to tear or yell to you my pain,
I know you're in my life, so, so much
That I look for you in my grief, trying to relief  the heart.

I only have from your love
A memory that is looking for you more and more
You played with my heart
And yet I don’t know how to forget.

Without knowing why your love come back to my memory,
Unable to tear or yell to you my pain,
I know you're in my life, so, so much
That I look for you in my grief, because I can not take it anymore.

Carpe Diem!

Remarkable interpretation of the message of this tango. Pain and passion come dramatically together in the dense movements that presage the somber end. Real as life itself. Carpe Diem!

Un Crimen (A Crime)

Tango Talks!

The great author, journalist and composer Luis Rubistein tells in this tango a particular story that could very well be the script of a film noir in the style of Jules Dassin, with its brutal antiheroes or out of a Werner Herzog's film  with its tortured and born-loser protagonists.

1979 Werner Herzog's film Woyzek

Sometimes love with exaggeration can lead us to the most sinister path condemning us to live forever with guilt and remorse and perpetually suffering not having anymore the person we loved, continuing to live only to miss him/her. The worst of punishments.

Acerca del Autor / About the Author
Luis Rubistein (1908-1954)

His family came from Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine. His father was a cobbler and his mother a teacher of a Hebrew school, they decided to emigrate to the scourge of anti-Semitism intensified in times of the Russo-Japanese War, and came to Buenos Aires in early 1906.

He was born in the humble family home in the neighborhood of San Cristobal, slice of the deep Argentina’s capital. In that house the father exercised his craft cobbler and the family poorly lived in only two rooms.

Rubinstein never was a subtle lyricist, overlapping to the fine tune of his music his truly brutal verses. This dichotomy in his work surprised most people and was part of its appeal. Luis could devise various subjects in a day. There were times in his life when he became a true “manufacturer” of songs, accumulating an indeterminable amount of work.

He was always proud of his Jewishness.. In 1942 Luis wrote the lyrics to " Yánkele (My Boy)", interspersing some lines in Yiddish with music by his brother Elijah. This song was composed for "I'm Jewish", a work of Luis Pozzo Ardizzi that which was broadcaste by Radio Del Pueblo with enormous success.

Castellano:

English:

My drama, Your Honor, is in the story
That well can start by the end,
I know that in the grotesque of my act
It's not easy to look sentimental.
The life I gave her was a torture
And her soul was bearing my frenzy,
My jealousy ended in madness
And through that hell, I got lost .

And I saw haze in her eyes
When my fingers of steel
In her pearled neck
Embroidered a necklace.
She rolled kissing my hands
And harly she couldn’t scream,
Her voice was drowned without reproach
And like that, gently, her night had an end.
I have her anguish in my eyes
And I can’t pull it out.

I want, Your Honor, with this story
Of a wicked and brutal crime,
That there will not be a spot in her memory
And know that she was good and I did wrong ..

Danced by Pino Bongiorno and Giulia Galante

Rome - 2013

Tango very well performed, respecting all the drama of the story, with dense and slow movements, almost in pain. The exaggerated volcada matches the commencement of the confession to the crime. Giulia’s ornaments, go perfect with the spirit and grief of the message. The dancers prevailed that than having a more technical and punctilious dance. So it should be!

Tango Talks!

What to do when a forbidden love is asking us to forget all the past, not realizing that it’s not possible to move on with the heart cut in pieces... slowly dying.  Again, tango talks to us...

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Roberto Chanel

It was an excellent singer , delicate, with a warm sweetness, typical exponent of his time. And yet it did not extended his fame beyond the knowledge of tango artists , collectors,or at most, of those who lived their time. For the very knowledgeable, he was the best singer of Pugliese, not the most popular or the most famous, but the one that better represented the Maestro. His version of the tango "Farol" of the Expósitos brothers is a classic.

His real name was Alfredo Mazzochi, alias El Turco. In the mid-1939’s and to join the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese, the singer takes the stage name of Roberto Chanel for an idea of Julio Jorge Nelson ( a leading lyricist and composer) was inspired by a poster advertising a jewelry store.

The researcher Nelida Rouchetto defined it thus: "With his nasal trawls , his “canyengue” diction and man of the people characteristics he kept fresh the roots that created the popular urban music . It was Chanel who identified himself as an instrument of the orchestra, in the manner of a viola, as can be seen from his first recording".

Castellano:

No sabes cuánto te he querido,
como has de negar que fuiste mía;
y sin embargo me has pedido
que te deje, que me vaya,
que te hunda en el olvido.

Ya ves, mis ojos no han llorado,
para qué llorar lo que he perdido;
pero en mi pecho desgarrado...
sin latidos, destrozado,
va muriendo el corazón.

Ahora, que mi cariño es tan profundo,
Ahora, quedo solo en este mundo;

English:

You don’t know how much I loved you,
How can you deny that you were mine;
however you asked me
to leave you, to go away,
to sink you into forgetfulness.

You see, my eyes haven't cried,
why to mourn what I have lost;
but in my torn chest...
with no beats, ripped,
the heart is dying.

Now, that my love is so deep,
Now, I'm left alone in this world;
doesn't matter that I’m dying and no one comes
to cover these spoils , I don’t care
about life! If my life is in your eyes.

Now that I feel the chill of death,
now that my eyes are not going to see you...
Doesn't matter If somebody will have you
if I know that no one can love you
so as much as I loved you .

But in my torn chest...
with no beats, ripped,
the heart is dying.
