Tango Talks!

Escuchemos…

Usually the tango lyrics speak of passions, missed connections from the past or unattainable love; this tango "Tell Me What Happened" instead is referring us to a state of indifference in a present full of routine. Love is nothing more than a lost thing to which the protagonists are not finding a solution. It’s the end of a journey? An open ending? Let’s listen…

Decime Qué Pasó

Castellano:

Siento rabia,
porque ha llegado el hastío,
se fue metiendo en nuestro nido
y en un descuido nos venció.
Siento rabia
por la impotencia en que vivo;

Siento rabia,
por este amor que se muere.
Nos preguntamos quién lo hiere
los dos juramos: Yo no soy.
Siento rabia,
porque aunque estamos unidos
nos vemos vacilantes,
sin besos que nos canten
la melodía del amor.
English

I feel anger,
because weariness has arrived,
it was getting into our nest
and in a carelessly move, beat us.
I feel angry
because the impotence in which I live;
this love is dying
something is hurting it
and I didn't find a salvation.

Tell me what happened between us,
life is not the same.
We had an irritation caused by silliness,
What happen that our love is dying?
Tell me what happened between us,
the phrase is on the lips of the two.
Maybe the heart is wrapping itself
In the nostalgia,
for memories of a better yesterday.

I feel anger,
for this love that is dying.
We wonder who is hurting it
the two of us sworn: "I am not".
I feel anger,
because although we are together
we see each other hesitant,
without the kisses that will sing to us
the melody of love.

Celosa (Jealous)

Vals (Argentine Waltz)

Music: Pablo Rodríguez
Lyrics: Pablo Rodríguez (Mercedes Simone's husband)

Orchestra: Emilio J.Brameri
Singer: Mercedes Simone. Nickname: La Dama del Tango (The "Tango Lady")
Recorded: 1966

Curated and translated by Luigi Seta

Jealousy has always been a source of many conflicts and songs, but none as beautiful as this waltz composed by Pablo Rodriguez and despite his Argentine origin it has been performed by Mexican singers after becoming famous in the voice of his wife Mercedes Simone, the "Female Gardel" as people called her, superbly performed with orchestra, bandoneon and the clean vocals for what she has been known.

Castellano:

Que has vencido mi alma,
Nunca te he querido, para qué negarlo
No quiero tu amor.

Jamás he pensado llorar un cariño,
Jamás he sabido lo que era sufrir,
Por qué te has marchado
Sin darme ni un beso,
Qué pena, Dios mío, me siento morir.

English:

I do not know why you say, that you saw in my eyes,
That I was crying, jealous of you.
As much as you see me sometimes tearful,
Please don’t believe that I regret the lost love.
A very clear proof, you had this afternoon,
You passed by with another woman, to see me suffer,
And instead of getting angry, as you have believed
I turned my face and started laughing.

If I cry don’t think that is for your love
That I have already lost,
It is not worth to spill more tears
For a love.
Already cried enough when I imagined
That you were about to forget me,
Yes before I cried, but today I do not cry
For your heart.

But yes I remember those moments
When you told me,
How much you loved me with all the affection
Of your heart
But no, please don’t think that I have been so sluggish
That you've defeated my soul
I never loved you, why deny it
I do not want your love.

I will not deny it, that I have been jealous
Seeing that with another woman you mocked me,
After the warmth of your mouth was mine
And crazy, on your lips, I gave you a thousand kisses.
I never thought to mourn a love,
I have never knew what it was to suffer,
Why you have gone
Without giving me one kiss,
I am so sad, my God, I feel like dying.

Es Hora De Vivir (It's Time To Live)

Tango

Music: Enrique Francini - Lyrics: Carlos Behar
Orchestra: Enrique Francini
Singer: Alberto Podesta
Date: 07/27/1956

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Castellano:

English:

Why to talk about my past and your past
if the past did not know about this love,
I don’t care what you've been or have loved,
why do you want to know about my past.
It only matters us giving ourselves to the destiny
that brings us in this adventure another illusion,
our story begins here with the plan
that is having us met in this afternoon of the two.

Lost in the life, our past
it was the bad, it stayed where it was ...
Leave all as is,
Let’s have unlifted the veil of mystery between us.
My mouth will erase all the kisses
that in your mouth burned the passion,
life begins here in this world
that suddenly opens us to illusion.
It's time to live!
we are together,
and love is a divine temptation ...

Let’s forget for good whatever it was,
because in this new chance of the two,
it only matters what we are today united,
what is bringing each other with all the heart.

Tango Talks!

Portero Suba Y Diga

Héctor Varela / Argentino Ledesma

Castellano:

Portero suba y dígale a esa ingrata

Y diga a esos maulas
sotretas sin nombre,
que aquí hay un hombre
si tienen valor.
Y dígale amigo
que aquí yo la espero
que aquí yo me muero
por ella de amor.

Dos años han pasado desde el día
en que llorando llegó hasta mí;
Portero suba y dígale a esa ingrata
que yo he venido a cobrarle su traición

Y diga a esos maulas
sotretas sin nombre,
que aquí hay un hombre
si tienen valor.
Y dígale amigo
que aquí yo la espero
que aquí yo me muero
por ella de amor.

English:

Concierge go up and tell her, the ungrateful,
that I’m here, that I'm not going anywhere
without reproaching face to face
the evil that she has done in my life by her betrayal.
Don’t be afraid, can’t you see that I'm quiet?
if I followed her it was to learn
if it is true that she dragged my love
with these boys in this bachelor flat.

And tell those despicable cowards
nameless rascals
that here is a man
if they have valor.
And tell her my friend
that here I’ waiting
that here I'm dying
for her love.

Two years have passed since the day
when she came to me crying;
two years that I struggled to save her,
to dress her and make her happy.
And all for what, I should kill her
for the mocking of my passion.
Concierge go up and tell her, the ungrateful
That I've come to avenge her betrayal

And tell those despicable cowards
nameless rascals
that here is a man
if they have valor.
And tell her my friend
that here I’m waiting
that here I'm dying
for her love.

No Me Esperes Esta Noche (Don't Wait For Me Tonight)

Tango
Música: Sara Rainer (Nicknamed Rianco)
Letra: Tito Depérgola
Orquesta: Sexteto Eduardo Del Piano
Canta: Nestor Soler, un cantante injustamente olvidado (a singer unjustly forgotten).

Translations by: Luigi Seta

This is an excellent singer of the '40s with characteristics that follows Hector Maure, sometimes with a “Carlos Gardel air”, but without imitating either and setting his own style, highlighted by the coloratura and the virile temper of his voice. This tango is telling us a story of the downfall of a forbidden love.

Castellano:

no me esperes corazón.
Como quisiera abrazarte,
como quisiera besarte
y entregarte el corazón.

No me esperes esta noche,
mi fracaso puede más.
A mi lado está el infierno,
soy tristeza, soy invierno,
no me esperes nunca más.

(Recitado)

English

My sweetheart, only half hour left
and you, smiling,  will go down from the  long train,
your looks anxiously will go around
on the people walking on the platform,
and in my room with your letter in my hands
and two tears triggered by the clock,
the moment of the time that is approaching
my heart cannot stand.

Do not wait for me tonight...
do not expect me, my sweetheart.
How I would like to embrace you,
how I would like to kiss you
and giving you all my heart.

Do not wait for me tonight,
my failure is more powerful.
Beside me is hell,
I am sadness, I am winter,
do not wait for me anymore.

(Recited)
My sweetheart, only half hour left
and you, smiling,  will go down from the  long train,
the moment of the time that is approaching
my heart cannot stand.
