Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

When love is so immense that it does not fit in the soul, and when two lovers can not be together because of the incomprehension of the others, sometimes the idea of suicide may appear to be a viable way out. Perhaps the dramatic, the tragic, the unexpected and the astounding in love, are the lens that stains that precise instant... Let's see how this vals tells us this drama...

Acerca del autor de la letra / About the author of the lyrics

Manuel María Flores (Puebla, Mexico City 1840 † 1885) was a Mexican writer and poet during the second half of the nineteenth century. He joined the group of writers who then brought together the best of nineteenth-century Mexican intellectuals: poets, prose writers, journalists and orators.

He had a passionate and forbidden relationship with Rosario de la Peña, the "official muse" of the rich literary movement of those years, the same as today we recognize as the post-Romantic period. The lyrics are actually the poem “El Adiós” which he writes one year before committing suicide for her.

Those who knew Rosario de la Peña overflowed with praise, described one by one their physical charms, character, ways to others. She was a true muse that inspired poetry.

Mnauel was a close friend of another poet, Manuel Acuña, with whom published poems, and who also committed suicide for Rosario de la Peña, but that's another story...

It is worth adding that "Adiós", the beautiful romantic poetry of this extraordinary Mexican creator, was musicalized by Antonio Tormo in 1948, becoming the vals "Dos Que Se Aman", perhaps one of the most beautiful pieces of the genre, with the particularity that author and composer, were never known, since they were not even contemporaries.

Dos Que Se Aman - Vals

Castellano:

¿No saben acaso

Te arroja a mis brazos.
y, bárbaro, luego me arranca a pedazos
el alma, la vida contigo... ¿Por qué?

Adiós... es preciso. No llores... y parte.
La dicha de vernos nos quitan nomás;

No tienen ausencia, no tienen adiós!

English:

Goodbye forever, love of my life,
a lonely soul we both had.
But today is needed that this soul part
the bitter word of the last adios.

Why they are separating us? Don’t they know perhaps
that life passes me like the flower passes?
We crossed the world as birds of passage...
Tomorrow, the grave; Why today, the pain?

The secret happiness of two who adore themselves
make angry the heavens, and forces us to suffer?
Are only pleasant the souls that are crying
for the grim fate... Is the law to die?

Are only pleasant the souls that are crying
for the grim fate... Is the law  to die?

Who is the destiny?... Throws you in my arms.
Carves you in my soul,  infuses you into my being,
And then, barbarically, tear in pieces
my soul, the life with you... Why?

Adios... it is necessary. Don’t cry... and part.
They are taking away the joy of seeing each other;
but, stopping of adoring you only by an instant,
make me forget...  Can they?  Never!

We are united with eternal bonds.
In vain the destiny is hurting us...
The souls that are in love don’t  have forgetfulness,
Don’t have absence, don’t have a goodbye!

Celosa (Jealous)

Vals (Argentine Waltz)

Music: Pablo Rodríguez
Lyrics: Pablo Rodríguez (Mercedes Simone's husband)

Orchestra: Emilio J.Brameri
Singer: Mercedes Simone. Nickname: La Dama del Tango (The "Tango Lady")
Recorded: 1966

Curated and translated by Luigi Seta

Jealousy has always been a source of many conflicts and songs, but none as beautiful as this waltz composed by Pablo Rodriguez and despite his Argentine origin it has been performed by Mexican singers after becoming famous in the voice of his wife Mercedes Simone, the "Female Gardel" as people called her, superbly performed with orchestra, bandoneon and the clean vocals for what she has been known.

Castellano:

Que has vencido mi alma,
Nunca te he querido, para qué negarlo
No quiero tu amor.

Jamás he pensado llorar un cariño,
Jamás he sabido lo que era sufrir,
Por qué te has marchado
Sin darme ni un beso,
Qué pena, Dios mío, me siento morir.

English:

I do not know why you say, that you saw in my eyes,
That I was crying, jealous of you.
As much as you see me sometimes tearful,
Please don’t believe that I regret the lost love.
A very clear proof, you had this afternoon,
You passed by with another woman, to see me suffer,
And instead of getting angry, as you have believed
I turned my face and started laughing.

If I cry don’t think that is for your love
That I have already lost,
It is not worth to spill more tears
For a love.
Already cried enough when I imagined
That you were about to forget me,
Yes before I cried, but today I do not cry
For your heart.

But yes I remember those moments
When you told me,
How much you loved me with all the affection
Of your heart
But no, please don’t think that I have been so sluggish
That you've defeated my soul
I never loved you, why deny it
I do not want your love.

I will not deny it, that I have been jealous
Seeing that with another woman you mocked me,
After the warmth of your mouth was mine
And crazy, on your lips, I gave you a thousand kisses.
I never thought to mourn a love,
I have never knew what it was to suffer,
Why you have gone
Without giving me one kiss,
I am so sad, my God, I feel like dying.
