Fue Mi Salvación (It Was My Salvation)

Tango - 1940

Music: Ascanio Donato
Lyrics: Alberto Cosentino
Orchestra: Edgardo Donato
Singer: Horacio Lagos

Performance: Buenos Aires, Nov 22, 1940 - Record Label RCA Victor

Curated and Translated  by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Behind this happy music a tense drama is hosted. Don’t be fooled by the cheerful style. Let’s discover together what is all about.

Si seguimos adelante será bajo nuestro propio riesgo.

When love turns into resentment, we achieve a determination we would never have suspected. Disenchantment proves to be stronger than feelings and now we hardly know ourselves desiring the worst to the one that once was the love of our life. The tango had already warned us. If we go ahead it will be at our own risk.

Acerca de la Orquesta / About the Orchestra
Edgardo Donato

After 1930 the orchestra of Edgardo Donato obtained a phrasing wrapped in a frank dynamism, where the predominance of the bandoneones and the frequent interventions of Donato as solo performer is emphasized.

Donato's interventions as a soloist showed his playful style of performance, playing with box, bow and strings. Thus, for example, he was seen playing knocking the violin box while holding the bow upright resting on his knee. The director was a complete exponent of a particular vibrant style, highlighting the musical acrobatics that Donato performed, along with his famous pizzicatos.

The new orchestra begins to record on the Brünswick label and acts in various cinemas and theaters, also on LS9 Radio La Voz del Aire, where they were announced as "The eight aces of Buenos Aires tango, Edgardo Donato and his formidable tipica criolla."

For the Brünswick label he recorded more than 130 tracks, in 1932 he went to Victor label and recorded "El Huracán", to which he was the author. He remains in this record label until the end, beyond a brief passage by the Pampa label, with a number superior to the four hundred performances.

His performances in radio were around-the-clock, the same in cabarets and clubs. His orchestra and his name have long been tango icons. His was a dance orchestra, without major stylistic pretensions, according to his cheerful and distracted temperament. Donato possessed a very particular musical language, essentially rhythmic, and his was an orchestra concerned, first of all, with executions appropriate for the dancers.

Fue Mi Salvación

Castellano:

A qué venís nombrando a Dios, si supe
Que tu querer fue todo una traición,
A qué venís, si sabes que a mi madre
Si sólo a ella, confié mi salvación.

Te quise ciegamente
Te quise con pasión,
Te quise inmensamente
Y todo fue ilusión.
Mi amor, tu bien lo sabes
En odio se volvió,
Amor, sólo a mi madre
Brinda mi corazón.

Te quise sin saberlo
Te quise, bien lo sé,
Te quise y al perderte
Jamas lo lamenté.
Venís arrepentida
Te mata la maldad
No quiero que a mi vida
Cubras con falsedad.
English:

What do you come for, continuing with your words
If your love was a breath and nothing more,
It destroyed my charm, that was tender
I can never give you love anymore.

What do you come for, naming God, if I knew
That your love was all a betrayal,
What do you come for, if you know that to my mother,
Only to her, I entrusted my salvation.

I loved you blindly
I loved you with passion
I loved you immensely
And it was all illusion.
My love, you well know
Turned into hate,
Love, only to my mother
My heart gives now.
I loved you without knowing it
I loved you, I know it well,
I loved you and loosing you
I never regretted it.
You are coming repented
Your evil is killing you
I do not want my life
Covered with your falsehood.

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Escuchemos y leamos a continuación.

Festive, so festive at first impression, but its cheerful rhythm encapsulates a torrid drama… Be careful!  Tango many times plays with our gullible sentiments... Let’s listen and read below.

Acerca de la Cantante Lita Morales y su misterio / About the Singer Lita Morales and her mystery

One of the only two photographs
of Lita Morales

Today we know little or nothing about Lita Morales, not even his real name, her date of birth or death, only exists two photographs of her. Suddenly she disappeared. Let's try to unravel the mystery...

In 1937 Donato, looking for even happier, cheerful and brighter sound, added to his bandoneons line-up a piano accordion, played by a 16-years old Osvaldo Bertone, or simply Bertolín.

And in 1939 he committed, to many, the unimaginable"crime" of accepting into the orchestra a female singer, it was Lita Morales, the wife of Horacio Lagos, who was its singer already. Their very first recording together was also one of their best… and quite foretelling as well.

It was “Carnaval De Mi Barrio” and Lita only sung the very happy lyrics of the first verse and the chorus, which is the best metaphor of what Donato music was all about.  In his arrangement Donato omitted the second verse with rather ominous stanza. Did he want to keep the vocals shorter or the mood of the tango happier? Or not to show the dramatic end? See (1) in the lyrics below.

The handsome Romeo Gavioli

In either case the significance of this foresight became obvious only when, half a year later, he invited to his orchestra another singer, Romeo Gavio (Gavioli).  A handsome Romeo that was not only a fellow Uruguayan, where Donato spent all of his youth, but also a skilled violinist, who could double in the orquesta when Donato wanted to try yet another of his tricks.

Lita (married to Horacio Lagos) got in febrile attraction to Romeo Gavioli and in September of 1940 they recorded the tango “Yo te amo” (“I love you”), pretty much openly admitting the beginning of their romance.

The tension started mounting in the orchestra. Last time all three of them could be heard together was in the vals “La Shunca”, in January of 1941, and after that Lita appeared on the recordings only with Horacio Lagos.

After August 1941 Lita completely disappeared from the orchestra, and there were no duo recording of Romeo and Horacio either. Soon after a year after Lita’s disappearance, Donato fired all three singers, Osvaldo Bertone (the young accordionist) left the orchestra also, Romeo Gavioli left Buenos Aires altogether and returned to Montevideo, and Donato himself appeared to be so heavily shaken by the events, that within a year his brother Osvaldo overtook the direction of the orchestra.

All we know is that Lita briefly reappeared on the tango scene in 1955-1956 with the following tango "Comadre" (Godmother). The described events are obviously somehow connected, but they lack a key. Just the triangle alone does not explain the gravity of the consequences. Neither it explains why the names of Lita and Horacio were erased from the history. And a possible key to understanding what actually happened is the fact that Lita had a son, Daniel  who was born,, amidst the described events and his biologic father was, presumably, Romeo.

Romeo Gavioli, devastated, after hearing the Lita's voice again on the record, couldn't bear the situation and knowing that he never will see her, committed suicide in 1957.

And evil tongues say that the young accordionist Bertolín left the formation due to its overwhelming and secret infatuation with Lita, following a bright career in jazz, to never return to tango.

Acordémonos de esto al bailar este tango! /
So, let's remember this when dancing this tango!

Castellano:

mastica su cachimbo, cansado de yugar;
y en su sonrisa amarga una nostalgia enreda;
también, allá en Italia, vivió su carnaval.
English:

My neighborhood is partying with its best smile
and a strange tenderness invades my heart.
It seems the time is running faster
and that the same clay spew forth a song.
The kid’s street band, out-of-tune singing a tango,
Mashing the ears with shrill voice...
Sparrows of my barrio pouring  over the mud,
handfuls of joy, that God gives them.

Carnival of my neighborhood
where everything is love,
Rattles of laughter
mitigating the pain...
Carnival of my barrio,
bit of sun,
with moon’s nostalgia
and streetlight's song.

(1)The one that returned without honor disguised herself as a brothel’s madame
while the neighborhood at each door constantly gossips about
her brazen dress, her jet-black eyes,
and the shamelessness that she can't hide...
The Italian greengrocer, lying on the sidewalk,
chews his pipe, tired of working;
and his bitter smile a nostalgia entangles;
also he, back in Italy, lived his carnival.

(1)This part of the lyrics it is not sung, hiding the dramatic picture that follows.
