Tango Talks!

Often we do not want to acknowledge the ending reality of a relationship ... and when we realize, boredom and routine inevitably have invaded everything...  And it's too late now to recuperate anything.  Tango already warned us...

Acerca de los intérpetes / About the performers

The Orquesta Típica Victor was the house band of the Victor record label to compete in the flourishing tango market and exclusively to sell its records.  The story of the Típica Victor begins in 1925 and finish in 1944 when the orchestra is disbanded.

During these years the orchestra performed more than 449 recordings, the Típica Victor never appeared in public, but they had a highly danceable style which also displayed the brilliance of its soloists, like in the case of this tango “ “Lo Ví En Tus Ojos”, passionately but elegantly interpreted by Alberto Carol.

Who was Alberto Carol? We only know of him that performed and recorded four tangos and one waltz for the Victor Orchestra only between March and May 1944. This is all we have of his career and his trail is lost in the mysteries of tango...

Lo Ví En Tus Ojos (I Saw It In Your Eyes)

Castellano

En tus ojos, yo lo vi
Aquella noche,
El hastío despiadado
Se cruzó como un ladrón.
Tus palabras
Como puntas de alfileres,
Se clavaron en mi alma
Sacudiéndome de horror.

Hoy, en torno nuestro
Todo es frío.
Ya no hay más que sombras
Ni esperanza.
Y cual un naipe
Arrojado con confianza,
En el truco de tu vida
Está la incomprensión.
Yo,
Creí posible tu amor,
En la noche de mi penar.
Hoy,
Repito aquella oración,
Que por ti, supe recitar.
No, no la maldigo señor,
Fue la vida que la hizo así.

Ves, enmudeció mi canción,
Ya jamás será para mí.
Dame de tu mano, el anillo,
Me dirás adiós, sin amargura
Marioneta sin destino, sin ventura,
No busquemos un culpable
Fue la vida, su dolor.

English

In your eyes, I saw it
That night,
The relentless boredom
That passed by like a thief.
Your words
As pinpoints,
Dug into my soul
Shaking me in horror .

Today, around us
Everything is cold.
Shades
Of a cruel despair.
Like  a card
Thrown with confidence,
In the poker of your life
It is misunderstanding.
I,
I thought possible your love,
On the night of my pain .
Today,
I repeat that prayer,
That for you, I knew how to whisper.
No, I do not curse her, sir,
It was life that did her so.

You see, my song was silenced,
She will never be for me.
Give the ring in your hand,
You will say goodbye, without bitterness
Aimlessly puppet, with no future,
Do not look for a culprit
It was life, its pain.

Una Tarde Cualquiera (An Afternoon Of Any Given Day)

Tango - 1945

Music: Roberto Puccio / Miguel Ángel Puccio
Lyrics: Rodolfo Taboada
Orchestra: Miguel Caló
Singer: Roberto Arrieta
This performance: Buenos Aires - Nov 15 1945 - Odeon 30007 15105

Tango Talks!

No demasiado valiente… no creen?

Again, Tango is making a point…  The male protagonist of this story can not bear his guilt and try to survive as best as he can taking the cruel decision that reality left him at hand.   Not too brave... is it not?

Acerca del cantor / About the singer
Roberto Arrieta

He was a baritone with a good Buenos Aires style, personal phrasing, with a very particular way by which it was claimed by several directors of orchestras, especially those that gave special importance to musicality and rhythm.

Arrieta debuted in 1931, at the early age of 16, with Juan Maglio ( Pacho ). From there he performed in leading orchestras such as Carlos Di Sarli, Juan Polito, Pedro Laurenz, Luicio Demare and very popular radio stations like Radio Belgrano and Radio Mitre.

But his definitive consecration came when he was invited to join Miguel Caló's orchestra in 1945. During his tenure with Miguel Caló, he recorded 26 songs and 4 solo-duets with Raul Iriarte . Among the most prominent of his interpretations is the tango “Una Tarde Cualquiera” (An Afternoon Of Any Day), for many his best performance.

Castellano

¡No, no me digas adiós!

English

No, do not say goodbye!
Do not say it, oh my God,
don’t even think about it!
I want to split up,
as if nothing happened,
as this afternoon were
an afternoon of any given day.

Since you are going away
don’t go like this, wounded sweetheart,
because you loved me so much,
my wounded bird, I ask forgiveness.

How different would be life
if I could erase the past,
with how much love would wash your wound
if I could make you return.
If I could find my apology,
if I could clear this guilt,
if I could pray, if I could mourn,

Oh! If I could at least forget.

*Well, the time came
I know everything is over,
I know anguish is waiting for me.
I only ask you to leave,
as if nothing happened,
as this afternoon were
an afternoon of any given day.
And if you could lie,
if you could fake a friendly phrase,
what a consolation would be that beautiful
white lie of your heart.*

* This part of the lyrics were not sang in any version, but I included here because adds to the sense of the message.*

Quiero Verte Una Vez Más (I Want To See You One More Time)

Tango - 1938

Music: Mario Canaro
Lyrics: José María Contursi
Orchestra: Francisco Lomuto
Singer: Fernando Díaz
This performance: Buenos Aires, August 12 1940, RCA Victor

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!

When we are abandoned by the person we love, sometimes we don’t hesitate to leave our pride aside…  just to confirm that return is impossible.  By all means not very recommendable ... but tango knew what we were about to do!

Acerca del cantor / About the singer

There is little that can be traced to the life of this excellent singer, beyond his outstanding season with the orchestra of Francisco Lomuto.

His personality, his warm baritone voice and tenor phrasing, made him a different, special, incredibly forgotten singer today, but luckily, there are many recordings to listen and evaluate his quality.

He was the "estribillista" and emblem singer in the Lomuto's orchestra, along with Jorge Omar, and the singer that more themes recorded: in excess of 170 recordings.

Castellano

Tarde que me invita a conversar
con los recuerdos,
pena de esperarte y de llorar
en este encierro...
Tanto en mi amargura te busqué
sin encontrarte...
¿Cuándo, cuándo, vida, moriré
para olvidarte?

*Quiero verte una vez más,
amada mía,
y extasiarme en el mirar
de tus pupilas;
quiero verte una vez más
aunque me digas
que ya todo terminó
y es inútil remover
las cenizas de un amor...
Quiero verte una vez más
¡Estoy tan triste
y no puedo recordar
por qué te fuiste!
Quiero verte una vez más
y en mi agonía
un alivio sentiré
y olvidado en mi rincón
más tranquilo moriré.*

Noche que consigues envolver
mis pensamientos…
English

Afternoon that is inviting me to talk
with memories ,
pain of waiting for you and mourn
in this prison...
So much in my bitterness I looked for you
without finding you...
When, when , life, I will die
to finally forget?

*I want to see you one more time,
my love,
and entranced in the gaze
of your eyes;
I want to see one more time
Doesn’t matter if you say to me
that it's all over
and is useless to remove
the ashes of a love...
I want to see you one more time
I am so sad
and I can not remember
because you left me!
I want to see you one more time
and in my agony
I will feel relieved
and forgotten in a corner,
I'll die quietly.*

Night that comforts
my thoughts...

Note: * This is the "estribillo" (chorus) the only performed part of the lyrics.

¿Quiénes fueron los “cantores estribillistas”? / Who were the "estribillistas singers”?

It is from 1924 and by an idea of Francisco Canaro, always looking to incorporate innovations to his orchestra, appears the "estribillista singer”, necessary antecedent of the forties’ "singer of the orchestra". They were the singers who only sang the chorus part of the lyrics, because back then the voice was considered an instrument and was not intended to be interposed with the beat of the music.

Singer Jorge Omar
The other Lomuto's "estribillista".

The "estribillista" was primarily a hero exposed to the worst conditions, had to impose the human voice in a very short period of the composition with the sound of an orchestra that did not stop his momentum as he sang.

The later success of the “estribillistas” forced the record companies to hire them as singers of the label company, or by the language of the time "singers of the house." This situation forces them to sing in all the orchestras working in the recording company. In the 40s the “estribillista” would interpret the complete lyrics, becoming the “singer of the orchestra”.

Foxtrot And Its Turbulent Relation With Tango

By Luigi Seta

On the 1930's decade Foxtrot was a very popular dancing genre in Buenos Aires, hand to hand with Tango. Developed in the 1910s, the foxtrot reached its height of popularity in the beginning of the 30s coinciding its success with the first decay of tango as a dance, so then many Orquestas Típicas had foxtrot in its repertoires, adapting the original lyrics from English to Castellano.

In all justice, I should say that foxtrot absorbed many qualities from tango, even its basic step is an adaptation of a tango step danced before that First World War. In the early 1930s was a brief vogue for a hybrid called “Tango-Foxtrot”.

Foxtrot dancers in 1922

Hasta que algo grandioso sucedió...

Until something great happened….

It was when Juan D’Arienzo, the father of the first renaissance of tango, had the great vision ( exactly in 1935) of taking back the 2x4 rhythm of the Vieja Guardia to perform afresh the old tangos,  but now in its characteristic new style, making tango very dance-able and popular again.

If we add to that the contribution of the great talent of Rodolfo Biagi at the formation’s piano, we have just  the perfect recipe for victory, sending foxtrot back to the Northern Hemisphere. By the end of the 1930s the battle was already won by tango, setting its supremacy in Buenos Aires until 1955, the begining of the end of the Golden Age.

But that's another story to be told...

A disfrutar!!

Now let’s listen to this foxtrot tanda exquisitely performed by the Enrique Rodriguez Orchestra with the distinct voice of Roberto “El Chato” Flores. Enjoy!

Dime Mi Amor (Tell Me, My Love)

Tango

Music: Rodolfo Sciammarella
Lyrics: Manuel Romero

This performance:
Orchestra: Juan D’Arienzo
Singer: Héctor Mauré
Recorded: Buenos Aires, May 21, 1941, RCA Victor Record No. 39297

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!

Sometimes distance and forgetfulness separates us from the person we used to love, but when tango makes us coincide, one more time the phantoms from the past may appear, unannounced… An unrealistic illusion may takes the 3-minute scene....

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer

Héctor Mauré
(Nombre real / Real name: Vicente José Falivene)

In 1940 D'Arienzo sees all his musicians leave, including Alberto Echagüe (to the new orchestra led by Juan Polito). He forms a new orchestra that will include the singers Alberto Reynal and Carlos Casares. At the end of that year, Carlos Casares is replaced by Héctor Mauré.With Mauré, the orchestra acquires a more lyrical, less rhythmically obsessed style.

Mauré’s line of interpretation was dramatic and melodic at the same time. A particular voice of baritone register with tenor’s characteristics, pleasant timbre and clear diction, powerful, melodious and refined voice.

On December 12, 1940 , makes his debut with the Juan Carlos Graviz waltz “Flor De Mal”, His last recording with D' Arienzo was the July 21, 1944 , with the tango “Amarras” (by Carlos Marchisio and Carmelo Santiago) were in total 50 records.

Mauré was the singer that perhaps inspired D’Arienzo to a adapt to a more lyrical style for these four years.

Castellano

si aún me quieres;
si la ausencia no mató tu querer,
si hoy, como ayer,
puedo creer...

English

On the sleepy rhythm of our tango
with my arm circling your waist
whispering thousand phrases of love
descrying thousand heavens of happiness.
I would like to know if there is in your heart,
still hope for me,
if absence and distance haven’t erased
the love that I, in your eyes have seen.

Tell me, my love,
tell me, my love
if you still love me;
if absence has not killed your love.
If today, like yesterday,
I can believe...
Tell me, my love,
tell me, my love
I you still prefer
my love
that I today, for you,
place in my sad song.

I would like to know if there is in your heart,
still hope for me,
if absence and distance haven’t erased
the love that I, in your eyes have seen.
