Tango

Music: Luis Stazo
Lyrics:  Federico Silva
Orchestra: Trio Stazo
Singer: Roberto Goyeneche
This performance: ANS Records – Buenos Aires - Catalog number: ANS 15207

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

About the end of the Golden Age era and Roberto Goyeneche.

For many reasons, in late 50’s, tango in the Rio de la Plata commenced to change. On the causes we can cite: a military coup, the powerful advent of Rock and Roll, the rebellious characteristics of the new youngsters, putting for first time in crisis the beliefs of previous generations, new broadcasting legislation allowing more foreign music, etc., accelerated somehow the decay of the tango dance as a social phenomenon; this new order lasted for about three decades.

Roberto Goyeneche
But tango reinvented itself to bridge those obscure times. So the voice of the singers were no longer treated as just an instrument between the Orquesta Típica and gained more protagonism (with the orchestra acting as a background) telling the stories directly in  a less danceable tango. Now the lyrics occupy almost the full three minutes of the song.

Julio Sosa first, and then,  after his tragic disappearance, Roberto Goyeneche “El Polaco”, were among the most famous singers of the 60’s. El Polaco was very well known for his mastering the of “Fraseo” (the almost talking of the lyrics with great and deep sentiment) offering his heart without limits in front of the audience.

Castellano:

English:

Suddenly the landscape disappeared
The cloud flying, the time of love.
And later we learned which is the message
for two that late wanted to dream.
Your summer light dreamed about me in autumn
and I thank you the happiness.
I can’t deceive you, my goodbye is sincere,
your you're in January, my April is going away.

Goodbye!
It is the way of saying now... never.
Goodbye!
It is the word that remained shaking .
Ouch!,
in the heart of the departure.
Bye Bye !,
Spine fine of the farewell.
Goodbye, my love!
We will not see each other anymore!

The lost dreams are hurting  me now
when it is not time of wanting to dream.
Ant then, I am the crying little boy
looking for the toy that have had not found.
Your bitter sugar entered in my veins,
It turned on the blood to the heart.
But I'm not lying, my goodbye is sincere,
your you're in January, my April is going away.

Paciencia (Let’s Face It)

Tango

Music: Juan D’Arienzo
Lyrics:  Francisco Gorrindo
Orchestra: Juan D’Arienzo
Singer: Enrique Carbel
This performance: Oct 29 1937 Buenos Aires RCA-Victor 38305 93946

Cuarted & Translated by Luigi Seta

Marcello Mastroiani and Monica Vitti
From the 1961 movie "La Notte" (The Night)
Have you ever had the urge of going back to the past looking for that yesterday’s relationship?  Many tangos are speaking of this irresistible impulse, but no one with this frank view. In life, as in tango, sequels are never very good..... Not even good….  Let’s listen....

Paciencia
Tango - 1937

Castellano:

Anoche, de nuevo te vieron mis ojos;

Paciencia...
La vida es así.
Quisimos juntarnos por puro egoísmo
y el mismo egoísmo nos muestra distintos.
¿Para qué fingir?
Paciencia...

*Haremos de cuenta que todo fue un sueño,
que fue una mentira habernos buscao;

English

Last night I saw you again;
Last night I had you, again to my side.
For what I have seen you if, after all,
We were two strangers looking at the past!
You're neither the same nor I...
The years! ... Life! ... Who knows
what! ...
Once and for all, frankness is best:
You and I can’t go back to yesterday.

Let’s face it ...
Life is like that.
We wanted to get together out of pure selfishness
and the same selfishness is showing us differently.
Why pretend?
Let’s face it!...
Life is like that.
No one is to blame, if there is a fault.
So the hand that I gave you in silence
didn’t tremble when we parted ways.

*We’ll pretend that it was all a dream,
that was a lie to have us in this pursuit;
so goodly, we have the consolation
to still believe that we haven’t changed.
I have a vision of those twenty years
when you were in the neighborhood the little sun.
I want always to see you cute as then :
what happened last night it was just a bad dream.

*This part of the lyrics is in the D'Arienzo/Echague's latter version, only.

Now let’s see performed by Gustavo Rosas and Gisela Natoli in a very playful, contemporary way without losing the essence of tango form. They are Teachers and Dancers combining his personal style, Traditional Tango with New Movements.

Have we ever been betrayed by someone? Here the character of this story says he has forgiven... trying to keep going ahead knowing that he will never be able to recover the other person. Has love overcome hatred in this case? Will it be true? Let's see what tango tells us ...

Acerca del  Autor  / About the Author
Guillermo Barbieri   (1894 - 1935)

He was a distinguished composer, not only for tango but the whole range of Creole music. Tunes born from his guitar down, from his father inherited the vocation since childhood, without a teacher, only under the love for the instrument.

He was one of the most notable guitarists of Carlos Gardel to whom he has been introduced in 1921, then they alternated on presentations and tours to Europe and the world. From a collection of his authorial work, more than half of it was made for Gardel. He died in the plane crash of the tragedy of Medellin with his dear friend.

Castellano

Y aunque me niegues que has sufrido
yo bien sé que me has querido
mil horas angustiosas
no quiero reprocharte
lo mal que te has portado.
Vos sos mujer y te perdono
Si al fin con tu abandono
me has hecho más feliz.

jamás nunca a tu lado volveré.
Te pago como has sabido pagarme,
y todo aquel pasado olvidaré.

English

Yesterday when I saw you so haughty
Walking with who was  my rival,
I thought on your twenty years
that gave more beauty to your gaze.
But today you are not the same than before,
the light that was in your eyes is no longer,
you have bitterness in your face,
nobody will know like me.

And even though you deny that you have suffered
I well know that you loved me
thousand agonizing hours
and that in your heart is left
the past bliss
like withered roses...
If you left me for another man,
I would not reproach you
how badly you've behaved.
You're a woman and I forgive you
If at the end with your abandon
you have made me happier.

I am like the bird, free flight
and in pursuit of a good soul my soul goes,
since when I need some comfort
there is another person that gives it to my soul.
Since it was your pleasure to despise me
I will never ever go back to your side.
I pay you as you pay me
and I’ll forget all that past.

Castellano:

Si yo sé que me querés,
si yo sé que me adorás,
y si no me lo decís
es porque no te animás;
puede ser que me equivoque,
puede ser que no sea así,
pero hay algo que te vende
y no lo querés decir.
¿Por qué tienes qué sufrir,
por qué tienes qué penar,
si con una palabrita
todo se puede arreglar?
No dejés para mañana
no te quedés sin hablar,
que el amor es una cosa
que no se puede ocultar.

Dímelo al oído
tan solo a mí,
que nadie se entere
de lo que me querés decir.

Dímelo al oído
tan sólo a mí,
te guardaré el secreto.
¡Lo juro por tí!

Si yo sé que me querés,
si yo sé que me adorás,
y si no me lo decís
es porque no te animás;
porque siempre que te miro
con los ojos vos me hablás,
y creés que con suspiros
todo se puede arreglar.
Una vez me enamoré,
y por tener corta edad
me quedé con mi cariño
para otra oportunidad.
Es mejor que te decidas,
no esperés ni un rato más,
que los cortos en la vida
siempre se quedan atrás...

English

If I know that you love me,
if I know you adore me,
but if you don’t  tell me
it’s because you are not encouraged;
I might be wrong,
it might not,
but there is something that reveals you
and you don’t  want to say.
Why do you have to suffer?
why do you have to bear?
if with a little word
everything can be fixed?
Don’t leave for tomorrow
don’t stay without talking,
that  love is a thing
impossible to hide.

Whisper it to me
just only to me,
that anyone will know
of what you want to tell me.

Whisper it to me
just only to me,
I will keep the secret.
I swear it for you!

If I know that you love me,
if I know you adore me,
but if you don’t  tell me
it’s because you are not encouraged;
because whenever I look at you
you talk to me through your eyes,
and you believe that with sighs
everything can be fixed.
Once I fell in love,
and because I was very young
I kept  my love
for another time.
It’s better that you make a decision,
Do not longer wait a moment,
that the timid in life
always are left behind ...

And now danced in a very sweet way, accordingly to the plot of this tango…. by Dominic Bridge and Jenna Rohrbacher.
