Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Letting go who we love hurts, that's beyond discussion..  Life is shattered, we repent, we cry, we shout, we despair,  We try to convince ourselves that it was the best decision,  but immediately it becomes present that damned "no" that returns us to the beginning...

And so begin the days without her or him , as learning to live again. It's hard for us to accept that we've been playing tricks... until we decide to go back. Tango had warned us what we were going to do... let's not say no!

Acerca del Autor de la Musica / About the Author of the Music
Charlo

After Carlos Gardel, Charlo was the most important singer that gave the tango, although, unlike him, he did not become a popular myth. In many of these versions reaches a level comparable to Gardel. Like this one, it contributed to establish an emotional style but austere, free of false efects, but perfect tuning and careful musicality. As a composer he displayed his great talent as a melodist, creating important works in the line of the tango romanza.

Charlo

He was born into a wealthy family. Throughout his life he would cultivate bourgeois customs, exhibiting his dandy image. It was what the porteños called a "jailaife" (derivation of high-life), of elaborate distinguished appearance. His refined style gave rise to the Charlo fashion, which encompassed clothing and other men's apparel.

Charlo, of beautiful voice and classic “galanura”, was quickly absorbed by the industry that moved around the tango and the Creole music. As with Gardel, in the 1930s his art changed the local color by a more universal character. This transformation will help you to succeed throughout America, Spain and Portugal. His prolonged tours and his periods of residence abroad lost his presence in the Argentinean tango.

His significant work as a composer, it was of a rare ability to express musically the human drama and the romantic outburst, as in the excellent tango "Rondando Tu Esquina".

Rondando Tu Esquina

Castellano:

¿Qué me has dado, vida mía,
que ando triste noche y día?
Rondando siempre tu esquina,
mirando siempre tu casa,

English:

Tonight I want to forget her,
but what a crazy urge to find her.
I don't care anymore what people will say
nor of the things they will sermon...
In fact, people always talk!
I think of her at all times.
This devouring passion is terrible.
And she without knowing,
without even suspecting
of my wishes to return...

What have you given me, my dear,
That I'm going sad night and day?
Always hanging around your street corner,
always looking at your house,
and this passion that hurts,
and this pain that does not go away.
Until when will I suffer
the torment of this love?

* This poor heart that does not forget her
and names her with the lips of its wound
and deepening its displeasure
the butterfly of pain
crosses the night of my life.
Comrades, today is verbena night.
However, I can't bear my suffering
and knowing that she is not here,
alone sad and without love,
I'm wondering incessantly.*

* This part of the lyrics is not sung, but contributes to the tango message.

Danced by Noelia Hurtado and Carlos Espinoza

Noelia is a dancer with an unusual quality of movements. Her dance, fast and responsive modulates the energies of the dancer and the dance music fusing them into a soft and smooth aura.  Her training as a dancer of traditional tango anchors her style to the true uncompromising saloon tradition, but with her softness and extreme musicality enriches and brings tango to new horizons.

Carlitos Espinoza  was always a fan of the closed embrace, he defines his dance as a mix between tradition and evolution, complementing the dynamics tango has today with its roots in the traditional milonguero style.

Me Besó Y Se Fue (She Kissed Me And Left)

Vals - 1935

Music: José Canet
Lyrics: José Canet
Orchestra: Ricardo Tanturi
Singer: Enrique Campos

This performance: Buenos Aires, Feb 9, 1945 - Recording Company: RCA-Victor 60-0638 80551

Curated and Translated  by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Couples in crisis can end up in different ways: agreements, disagreements, claims, not fully knowing the other, violence, etc. Perhaps the most incomprehensible because of the suddenness of the behavior is to abandon the other without any explanation. This way of concluding a link is called "ghosting" in reference to the movie "Ghost".

Deciding to leave everything without any explanation requires both parties (the one who leaves and the one who stays) to think what happened. Surely the most affected is the one suffering from abandonment: questions, reproaches, anguish, anger, what could not be said or done, and so on. The left or the abandoned, is left in a situation of permanent waiting.

Waiting forever... without ever being able to know the reason... As always, Tango, with almost a century of anticipation, foretold us...

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Enrique Campos

He was a singer who poured instant sympathy. Of a very musical phrasing and perfect diction, the triumph in that Buenos Aires of the forty, was not easy and nevertheless he began winning.

Because he had to replace in Ricardo Tanturi‘s orchestra, none other than Alberto Castillo, who had become the winning image of that ensemble, with the unprecedented popular drag that he achieved.

He had presence, personality and a different voice that looked in his phrasing and melodious expression.  There remains the testimony of the albums to confirm his great conditions and leave in evidence that he was one of the great singers of tango.

Me Besó y Se Fue - Vals

Castellano:

Y he sufrido tanto para comprenderlo,

*Y he quedado solo, con mis pensamientos,

English:

Yesterday, on a bench in the old square
which adorns my town where I was born,
I realized with regret that life passes,
that life passes by taking me.

And I have suffered so much to understand it,
had to go away the one I adored
to realize that so without knowing it
attached to her lips my faith died.

Sitting on the bench, I remembered the evenings
in which very close we both knitted
the burning romance of a healthy affection,
I was a crazy provincial who dreamed a love.

She was a goddess who came to my small town
to forget her ennui, defeated perhaps,
she curled in my song, divine and tyrannical,
and a gray morning she kissed me and left.

* And I have been alone, with my thoughts,
in the old square that saw me grow,
who listened in silence to so many oaths
pious lies of that woman.

How many crazy dreams, forged my rapture
when in his lap her voice cooed me.
passing bird that eager for kisses
settled on my lips, kissed me and left.

Sitting on the bench, I remembered the evenings
in which very close we both knitted
the burning romance of a healthy affection,
I was a crazy provincial who dreamed a love.*

She was a goddess who came to my small town
to forget her ennui, defeated perhaps,
she curled in my song, divine and tyrannical,
and a gray morning she kissed me and left.

Fue Mi Salvación (It Was My Salvation)

Tango - 1940

Music: Ascanio Donato
Lyrics: Alberto Cosentino
Orchestra: Edgardo Donato
Singer: Horacio Lagos

Performance: Buenos Aires, Nov 22, 1940 - Record Label RCA Victor

Curated and Translated  by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Behind this happy music a tense drama is hosted. Don’t be fooled by the cheerful style. Let’s discover together what is all about.

Si seguimos adelante será bajo nuestro propio riesgo.

When love turns into resentment, we achieve a determination we would never have suspected. Disenchantment proves to be stronger than feelings and now we hardly know ourselves desiring the worst to the one that once was the love of our life. The tango had already warned us. If we go ahead it will be at our own risk.

Acerca de la Orquesta / About the Orchestra
Edgardo Donato

After 1930 the orchestra of Edgardo Donato obtained a phrasing wrapped in a frank dynamism, where the predominance of the bandoneones and the frequent interventions of Donato as solo performer is emphasized.

Donato's interventions as a soloist showed his playful style of performance, playing with box, bow and strings. Thus, for example, he was seen playing knocking the violin box while holding the bow upright resting on his knee. The director was a complete exponent of a particular vibrant style, highlighting the musical acrobatics that Donato performed, along with his famous pizzicatos.

The new orchestra begins to record on the Brünswick label and acts in various cinemas and theaters, also on LS9 Radio La Voz del Aire, where they were announced as "The eight aces of Buenos Aires tango, Edgardo Donato and his formidable tipica criolla."

For the Brünswick label he recorded more than 130 tracks, in 1932 he went to Victor label and recorded "El Huracán", to which he was the author. He remains in this record label until the end, beyond a brief passage by the Pampa label, with a number superior to the four hundred performances.

His performances in radio were around-the-clock, the same in cabarets and clubs. His orchestra and his name have long been tango icons. His was a dance orchestra, without major stylistic pretensions, according to his cheerful and distracted temperament. Donato possessed a very particular musical language, essentially rhythmic, and his was an orchestra concerned, first of all, with executions appropriate for the dancers.

Fue Mi Salvación

Castellano:

A qué venís nombrando a Dios, si supe
Que tu querer fue todo una traición,
A qué venís, si sabes que a mi madre
Si sólo a ella, confié mi salvación.

Te quise ciegamente
Te quise con pasión,
Te quise inmensamente
Y todo fue ilusión.
Mi amor, tu bien lo sabes
En odio se volvió,
Amor, sólo a mi madre
Brinda mi corazón.

Te quise sin saberlo
Te quise, bien lo sé,
Te quise y al perderte
Jamas lo lamenté.
Venís arrepentida
Te mata la maldad
No quiero que a mi vida
Cubras con falsedad.
English:

What do you come for, continuing with your words
If your love was a breath and nothing more,
It destroyed my charm, that was tender
I can never give you love anymore.

What do you come for, naming God, if I knew
That your love was all a betrayal,
What do you come for, if you know that to my mother,
Only to her, I entrusted my salvation.

I loved you blindly
I loved you with passion
I loved you immensely
And it was all illusion.
My love, you well know
Turned into hate,
Love, only to my mother
My heart gives now.
I loved you without knowing it
I loved you, I know it well,
I loved you and loosing you
I never regretted it.
You are coming repented
Your evil is killing you
I do not want my life
Covered with your falsehood.

Hablemos Claramente (Let's Talk Frankly)

Tango - 1941

Music: Osvaldo Fresedo
Lyrics: Francisco Loiácono
Orchestra: Osvaldo Fresedo

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Entonces somos cobardes y preferimos no escuchar esa verdad… El tango nos los predijo. Escuchemos…

Image from the movie Big Brown Eyes (1936)
Joan Bennett and Cary Grant

Sometimes we fear confronting a reality that rampantly is approaching us. We fear everything: time, death, love, truth or changes... But... we are especially afraid of the fact that love passes and the unbearable of its suffering... Then we became cowards to prefer not to listen to the truth... Tango did predict it. Let's listen...

Acerca del Cantante / About the Singer
Ricardo Ruiz

Like many others, he began his professional career on the radio, at the famous Chispazos de Tradición radio soap opera in LR3 Radio Belgrano, which was transmitted from the building called the Palace of the Broadcastings, located at  the Belgrano Avenue of the city of Buenos Aires, where he acted and sang.

At that time Argentina was the fourth importing country of radiotelephony equipment of the United States and some estimates fix between 450,000 and 530,000 the apparatuses in operation. In the year 1935, he is hired by Francisco Canaro to sing in his musical work Rascacielos (Skyscrapers).

His record of tenor, his tuning and his delicate saying were virtues that Maestro Osvaldo Fresedo appreciated to call him, even if it was only for a replacement of his singer Roberto Ray, that same year. He waited to 1939 to join definitively the orchestra, constituting next to Ray the two most representative singers of Fresedo. They were irreplaceable.

He spent almost three years and recorded 29 songs, among them the beautiful tango "Vida querida", and "Rosarina linda". It was his stage of splendor and fame that would not be repeated in the future. In 1942, he disassociated himself from the orchestra and began his pilgrimage by different orchestras and also outside the country, in South America.

At the beginning in the fifties the happy tango times were coming to an end. It was becoming increasingly difficult for artists to get on the record. Citizen music was being displaced by other foreign rhythms and our singer like many others, were losing the record market and the show in general.

I like to remember it in his moment of glory next to Osvaldo Fresedo, whose cycle would have been enough to have it in the consideration and recognition of those who love the best tango.

Hablemos Claramente
Tango - 1941

Castellano:

Y bueno, ¡A ver!, hablemos claramente

Y tus mismas palabras nunca nombran
El tema que tenemos que abordar.

Hablá, hablá sin miramientos
No tengas compasión,
Soltá, soltá todas las sombras
Que hay en tu corazón.
Después, después que haya escuchado
Tal vez no vuelva más,
Así sabré que te he dejado
Temiendo a la verdad.

Y bueno ¡A ver!, no llores tontamente
Me callo si al hablarte te hago mal,
Sigamos enlazados al silencio
Tus lágrimas me han dicho la verdad.
English:

And, well, let's talk frankly
Let's not dodge the truth,
There are horrible moments that hurt us
There are things we try to avoid.

I know very well that you are gathering shadows
Your eyes refuse to look,
And your very words never name
The issue we have to address.

Speak, speak without regret
Do not have compassion,
Let go of all the shadows
That are in your heart.
Then, after you've heard
Maybe I will not come back,
Then I will know that I have left you
Fearing the truth.

Well, let's see! Don't cry foolishly
I shut up if
when I talk to you I hurt you,
Let us remain linked to silence
Your tears have told me the truth.
