Tango Talks!

Love often engulfs us in a sheath of subtle fragility: everything we do, say or do not say affects us more intensely, everything becomes harder and consequently, both happiness and suffering are experienced in a much profound way.

Hence, for example, we want to move away from a sentimental failure to avoid pain, it is better to flee. What hurts is best avoided. Pure classical conditioning. But... Is this the right thing to do? Is it better to avoid falling in love again to not suffer? And even more... how can we trust love again? Maybe the answer is in this tango... or maybe not. Let's listen.

Acerca del Autor de la Letra / About the Author of the Lyrics

Unlike other popular creators who displayed their talent instinctively and somewhat naif, and then be vindicated by future interpreters, Discépolo was always aware of his contributions. He could even be sure that all his artistic production is articulated by common style, a certain air or "discepoliano" spirit, a grotesque that criticizes society and its pain, which people immediately recognize, with affection and admiration, as if their work -more than once defined as prophetic- expressed the common sense of the Argentines.

The singularity of Discépolo continues to disturb, both inside and outside the universe of tango. Or to say it with one of his favorite images: “continues to bite”. Enrique was formed watching theater of the hand of his brother Armando, the great playwright of the River Plate’s grotesque, and soon after he was attracted by the popular arts. He arrived at the tango after having tried, with disparate luck, the theatrical authorship and performance.

At a time when authorship and composition were clearly differentiated within the framework of cultural industries, Discépolo wrote lyrics and music, although the latter was imagined with just two fingers on the piano, and then brought to the score by some friend musician (usually Lalo Scalise). This double ability enabled Discépolo to work every tango as a perfect unit of lyrics and music. With a keen sense of rhythm and dramatic progression, with an impeccable melodic taste Discépolo managed to make his brief and often violent stories an authentic human drama and sometimes a bit nostalgic and melancholic as in the tango "Uno".

Uno - Tango 1943

Castellano:

me abrazaría a tu ilusión
para llorar tu amor...

Pero, Dios, te trajo a mi destino
sin pensar que ya es muy tarde
y no sabré cómo quererte...
Déjame que llore
como aquel que sufre en vida
la tortura de llorar su propia muerte...
Pura como sos, habrías salvado
mi esperanza con tu amor...
Uno está tan solo en su dolor...
Uno está tan ciego en su penar....
Pero un frío cruel
que es peor que el odio
-punto muerto de las almas-
tumba horrenda de mi amor,
¡maldijo para siempre y me robó...
toda ilusión!…
English:

Oneself, look full of hope
the road that dreams
promised to my eagerness ...
Knowing that the fight is cruel
and it's a lot, but fight and bleeds
by the faith that obstinates me...
Oneself is creeping among thorns
and in the eagerness to give love,
suffers and is destroyed to understand
that oneself has remained without heart...
Price of punishment that oneself delivers
for a kiss that does not arrive
to a love that has deceived...
Empty of loving and crying
such treachery!

If I had the heart...
(The heart I gave you! ...)
If I could like yesterday
love without present...
It is possible that to your eyes
that scream love to me
I could close them with my kisses
without thinking they were like those
other eyes, the wicked,
those who drowned my life.
If I had the heart ...
(The same that I lost! ...)
If I forgot the one that yesterday
destroyed my heart and... could love you ..
I would embrace your dream
to cry for your love...

But God brought you to my fate
without thinking that it is too late
and I will not know how to love you...
Let me cry
like the one who suffers in life
the torture of mourning his own death...
Pure as you are, you would have saved
my hope with your love
Oneself is so alone in this pain ...
One is so blind in this agony....
But a cruel cold
which is worse than hate
-dead point of the souls-
horrible tomb of my love
cursed forever and robbed me...
all dreams

Tango Talks!

Sometimes we are so desperate to receive love that we accept substitutes... We down the curtain and pretend that what we receive is what we want, or what is worse what we deserve... Then we are not hesitating in begging for love, because we can not overcome the grief of loving somebody that does not love us... then we deny reality.  Tango already knew it...  and it foretold us.

Acerca del Autor de la Letra / About the Author of the Lyrics
Luis Rubistein (1908-1954)

His family came from Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine. His father was a cobbler and his mother a teacher of a Hebrew school, they decided to emigrate to the scourge of anti-Semitism intensified in times of the Russian-Japanese War, and came to Buenos Aires in early 1906.

He was born in the humble family home in the neighborhood of San Cristobal, slice of the deep Argentina’s capital. In that house the father exercised his craft cobbler and the family poorly lived in only two rooms.

Rubinstein never was a subtle lyricist, overlapping to the fine tune of his music his truly brutal verses. This dichotomy in his work surprised most people and was part of its appeal. Luis could devise various subjects in a day. There were times in his life when he became a true “manufacturer” of songs, accumulating an indeterminable amount of work.

He was always proud of his Jewishness.. In 1942 Luis wrote the lyrics to " Yánkele (My Boy)", interspersing some lines in Yiddish with music by his brother Elijah. This song was composed for "I'm Jewish", a work of Luis Pozzo Ardizzi that which was broadcasted by Radio Del Pueblo with enormous success.

Nada Más

Castellano:

Me moriré si me dejás

¿Qué voy a hacer si me dejás
con el vacío de mi decepción?
No te vayas te lo ruego,
no destroces mi corazón,
si no lo hacés por amor
hacelo por compasión
pero por Dios no me dejés
jamás te molestaré,
seré una sombra a tus pies,
tirada en algún rincón.
English:

I want nothing, nothing else
That you don’t leave me, face to face, with life.
I will die if you leave me
Because without you I will not know how to live.

And I do not ask you more than that,
Do not let me succumb,
I beg you for God
Do not take away the warm
Of your love and your kisses,
If I lack the light
Of your eyes, which is my sun,
My life will be a cross.

*How much snow will there be in my life
Without the fire of your eyes!
And my soul, already lost,
Bleeding from the wound,
It will let die,
And in the cross of my desires
I will fill my soul with haze,
The blue of the sky will die,
Over my yearning
Watching you leave.*. (1938's version)

I want nothing, nothing more
Than the lie of your love, as a charity..
What will I do if you leave me?
With the emptiness of my deception?
Do not go away, I beg you,
Do not break my heart
If you do not do it for love
Do it out of pity
But for God's sake do not leave me
I will never bother you
I will be a shadow at your feet,
Lying in some corner.

Nota / Note:

*In this first performance of 1938, the singer is only singing the refrain or chorus. This way to perform was to highlight the music only, in an effort to make a very danceable song.* Please go below to the contemporary interpretation  of Orquesta Típica Misteriosa Buenos Aires with the full version of the lyrics.

Public comment on the dance of this superb Russian Tango dancers made by an Argentinian tanguero, Bigote de Alpargata:

10th Tango Night
Russia - 2016

"I'm an Argentine tango dancer and I can say that this is the right way to dance tango. This is how to tango stage should be danced, without losing the milonguero essence . No jumps or strange things. Man must be only the choreographer for women to demonstrate her mastery of the dance. My sincere thanks and congratulations!"

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Letting go who we love hurts, that's beyond discussion..  Life is shattered, we repent, we cry, we shout, we despair,  We try to convince ourselves that it was the best decision,  but immediately it becomes present that damned "no" that returns us to the beginning...

And so begin the days without her or him , as learning to live again. It's hard for us to accept that we've been playing tricks... until we decide to go back. Tango had warned us what we were going to do... let's not say no!

Acerca del Autor de la Musica / About the Author of the Music
Charlo

After Carlos Gardel, Charlo was the most important singer that gave the tango, although, unlike him, he did not become a popular myth. In many of these versions reaches a level comparable to Gardel. Like this one, it contributed to establish an emotional style but austere, free of false efects, but perfect tuning and careful musicality. As a composer he displayed his great talent as a melodist, creating important works in the line of the tango romanza.

Charlo

He was born into a wealthy family. Throughout his life he would cultivate bourgeois customs, exhibiting his dandy image. It was what the porteños called a "jailaife" (derivation of high-life), of elaborate distinguished appearance. His refined style gave rise to the Charlo fashion, which encompassed clothing and other men's apparel.

Charlo, of beautiful voice and classic “galanura”, was quickly absorbed by the industry that moved around the tango and the Creole music. As with Gardel, in the 1930s his art changed the local color by a more universal character. This transformation will help you to succeed throughout America, Spain and Portugal. His prolonged tours and his periods of residence abroad lost his presence in the Argentinean tango.

His significant work as a composer, it was of a rare ability to express musically the human drama and the romantic outburst, as in the excellent tango "Rondando Tu Esquina".

Rondando Tu Esquina

Castellano:

¿Qué me has dado, vida mía,
que ando triste noche y día?
Rondando siempre tu esquina,
mirando siempre tu casa,

English:

Tonight I want to forget her,
but what a crazy urge to find her.
I don't care anymore what people will say
nor of the things they will sermon...
In fact, people always talk!
I think of her at all times.
This devouring passion is terrible.
And she without knowing,
without even suspecting
of my wishes to return...

What have you given me, my dear,
That I'm going sad night and day?
Always hanging around your street corner,
always looking at your house,
and this passion that hurts,
and this pain that does not go away.
Until when will I suffer
the torment of this love?

* This poor heart that does not forget her
and names her with the lips of its wound
and deepening its displeasure
the butterfly of pain
crosses the night of my life.
Comrades, today is verbena night.
However, I can't bear my suffering
and knowing that she is not here,
alone sad and without love,
I'm wondering incessantly.*

* This part of the lyrics is not sung, but contributes to the tango message.

Danced by Noelia Hurtado and Carlos Espinoza

Noelia is a dancer with an unusual quality of movements. Her dance, fast and responsive modulates the energies of the dancer and the dance music fusing them into a soft and smooth aura.  Her training as a dancer of traditional tango anchors her style to the true uncompromising saloon tradition, but with her softness and extreme musicality enriches and brings tango to new horizons.

Carlitos Espinoza  was always a fan of the closed embrace, he defines his dance as a mix between tradition and evolution, complementing the dynamics tango has today with its roots in the traditional milonguero style.
