Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Veamos...

"Le Notti Bianche" (White Nights)

What happens to us, when after a betrayal the love of our life wants to return ? Do we do what we had thought to do at this moment, induced by revenge?  Hmm... This tango tells us with incredible courage that reality is almost always more powerful than our thoughts. Let's see…

Acerca del Cantor / About the Singer
Raúl Iriarte

Nombre real / Real name: Rafael Fiorentino (1916 - 1982)

He was born in the Buenos Aires’s very tanguero neighborhood of Barracas; his parents moved later to the middle upper class area of San Isidro. Maybe after Gardel, has been one of the tango vocalists most famous and requested in Latin America.

Since early age he was inclined towards music; he had a devotion for singing and guitar playing. He made his debut in radio at the early age of 17. He had a baritone range, an afflicted voice with special color, perfect diction and good scenic look.

After other orchestras, in the early 1943 he joined  Miguel Caló cutting his first record:”Es en vano llorar” (It’s in vain to cry for you). In the whole American continent his name was extremely popular. So much so that on the radio programs that aired tango music only were included Iriarte's and Gardel's records. His most polished numbers with Miguel Caló were undoubtedly the key to such boom.

Acclaimed and admired in all the places in which he arrived with his voice and his special and pleasant way, he was one of the most important ambassadors of Argentine tango. His gallant look and smile, in addition to his song quality, opened all the doors and innumerable female hearts that fell in love with him. Roberto Arrieta, his ex-partner in the orchestra of Caló graced it like this: "Raul left a myriad of broken hearts ....". It was really an idol.

Los Despojos

Castellano:

Ven, levántate no llores,
no me jures ni me implores,
yo esperé que alguna vez
hincándote a mis pies
traerías tus dolores.
Mas los años que pasaron,
mis rencores atenuaron.
Y hoy que al fin te vuelvo a ver,
no llores, por favor,
que ya te perdoné.

Despojos solamente quedan hoy,
¿Por qué has vuelto así
con las sombras del ayer,
arrastrando tu vejez junto a mí?
no sé si has hecho bien en regresar.

(1) Como el sol reseca el lodo...
borra el tiempo, todo, todo...
Y se aprende a perdonar
de nuevo al encontrar
la vida en un recodo...
Una luz en mis tinieblas
es tu nombre hecho de niebla,
puede ser que salga el sol
detrás de tu dolor
detrás de mi dolor…

English:

Come, get up, do not cry,
do not swear, do not implore,
I hoped that maybe you,
knelled  to my feet,
would bring your suffering.
But the years that has passed,
my grudges subsided.
And today that finally see you again,
don't cry please,
because I already forgave you.

Only remains are today,
remains of your love and my love.
Why did you come back like this,
along with yesterday's shadows,
dragging your oldness to me?
Look how I am for being away from you,
I also grew older in pain.
Today we are the remains, nothing more,
I don't know if you've done well in coming back.

(1) As the sun dries the mud...
time erases everything, everything ...
And you learn to forgive
again, to find
life in a turn...
A light in my darkness
is your name, made of fog,
may be the sun will rise
behind your pain
behind my pain...

Danced by Vanesa Villalba and Facundo Piñero

Why is it we repent when it is always too late?  Sometimes we let somebody go only by impulse... But when we don’t have the person any longer, we realize the error.   Tango already knew and warned us...  And now the worst thing is that there is no turning back...

Acerca del autor de la letra / About the lyricist
Horacio Sanguinetti

Many reasons are coincident to consider Horacio Sanguinetti as one of the poets that helped to excel the tango literature, especially in the period, justifiably famous, known in the history of tango as the Forties’ Decade.

The popular songs were the origin of his inspiration, through a language always neat, which, together with not a few genuinely poetic turns, made prevail his great skill as lyricist, conjugating art with craftsmanship. Generally he addressed Love, the great theme of tango, which he dealt with in very romantic characteristics, in an array of different situations.

The year 1944 will mark the best moment of his plays and its successes. It premiering his best work, or perhaps the most widespread: the tango “Nada”, that achieved with the passage of time countless recordings. On the next year, 1945, the booms continued, where we can found “Discos de Gardel” and “Ivón”.

Very little is known about the life of Horacio Sanguinetti . The search for a picture, at least one, was unsuccessful . Another mystery that contributes to his myth. He dies in his hometown of Montevideo Uruguay, in 1957.

Ivón - 1945

Castellano:

English

Your voice trembled in the silence,
your wounded voice saying goodbye.
Then your eyes, under the black
beaver hat,
cried our separation.

And this pain, my pretty Ivón,
is always scratching my heart.
My young years
could not understand or reason,
my big mistake.

Where you will be, Ivón!
From street to street my love names you.
Where you will be,  Ivón!
From neighborhood to neighborhood, I look for you.
And I think you're running away from me,
feeling terror of my shadow.
And rightly, Ivón!
And I am bleeding, without your forgiveness.

*My chest beats with emotion today,
and that way, your heart.
I remember now that his rhythm
It seemed a clock ...
That night of our farewell
and that night for the two of us
meant destruction,
hallucinating unconsciousness
I sought your presence
only then and it was too late.*
