Aquí se cuenta la historia de una francesita, costurera y bordadora, quien deja sus humildes comienzos de la afueras de Paris y llevada de la mano del tango y el cabaret viaja a Buenos Aires en pos de un sueño, para nunca más volver y morir allí trágicamente por los efectos del alcohol y la cocaína.
Here the story of a young French girl, a seamstress and embroiderer, who leaves her humble beginnings from the Paris outskirts and led by the hand of the tango and the cabaret, travels to Buenos Aires following her dreams, to never return and to die tragically there under the influence of the alcohol and cocaine.
Este tango fue estrenado el 27 de octubre de 1924 por el tenor Raúl Laborde en la representación del sainete “Hoy transmite Radio Cultura”. Fue grabado también, entre otros, por Carlos Gardel, Ignacio Corsisni, Roberto Rufino, Roberto Goyeneche, Edmundo Rivero.
This tango was released on October 27th 1924 by tenor Raul Laborde in representing the farce "Today transmits Radio Culture". It was also recorded, among others, by Carlos Gardel, Ignacio Corsisni, Roberto Rufino, Roberto Goyeneche, Edmundo Rivero.
En francés se les llama “grisette” a las obreritas, especialmente a las costureras y bordadoras, por el color gris de sus uniformes. Gracias a este tango aún hoy la palabra “grisette” sigue en uso pero refiriéndose a una joven mujer de vida disipada.
In French were called "grisette" the young female factory workers, especially seamstresses and embroiderers, because the grey color of their uniforms. Thanks to this tango even today the word "grisette" still in use but referring to a young woman's dissipated life.

(1) Menciona a los personajes de la novela “Scènes de la vie de Bohème” de Henri Murger (1822-1861), sobre la que se hizo la famosa ópera de Puccini “La boheme”. Musetta y Mimí son dos costureritas que viven apasionados romances al igual que Rodolfo, amante de Mimí, y Schaunard, un músico.
(2) Aquí menciona a los personajes de la novela “Les Aventures du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut” del abad Antoine François Prévost d’Exiles (1697-1763), mejor conocido como Abate Prévost. Aquí Des Grieux es amante de Manon, quien muere hacia el final de la novela.
(3) “Barrio”, especialmente in una ciudad francesa. En la letra se refiere al Barrio Latino en Paris.
(4) Margarita Gauthier es el personaje central de la novela “La dama de las camelias” de Alejandro Dumas (h) (1824-1895), quien también muere tristemente víctima de la tuberculosis. (5) Armand Duval es el amante de Margarita Gauthier en la novela de Dumas.
(6) El “muguet” es un arreglo floral típico de Francia con la que se estila adornar la ciudad los primeros de mayo. Son unas campanillas blancas que se marchitan en poco tiempo.
