Did we ever think that resentment would be so close to what love was? That with our hearts clouded, we do not recognize ourselves anymore?  Tango knew it... see what it has to tell us...

Acerca del Cantor / About the Singer Alberto Morán

In the history of singers there was no similar case to his. He was a hinge between the orchestra singer in the 40's and the soloist of the 50s. He was a popular idol and this was evidenced up to the end of his life because his fans never forsook him in spite of the fact that his voice had declined noticeably through the years.

The nine years in Osvaldo Pugliese's orchestra were revealing and favored the success which would follow in his career as soloist. During these years he hypnotizes the audience particularly women, not only with his voice but also with his charming look. When he sang women stopped dancing just to watch him.

We can say, with no fear to be wrong, that his first period was enough to make him in vogue the rest of his life. It did not matter that the power and freshness of his voice left him early, as his particularly dramatic style and profound sentiment, were enough to remain him an idol.

La Mentirosa

Castellano:

Cuanto te amé, puedo decir que jamás
a otra mujer, podré querer como a vos.
La juventud no volverá nunca más
y a la ambición podré decirle adiós.
Qué tiempo aquel, hora fugaz que pasó,
todo el valor de una pasión conocí.
Cuanta feliz frase de amor escuché,
que siempre yo, sumiso y fiel te creí.

Las caricias de tus manos,
tus palabras de ternura,
dejaron cruel amarguras,
porque nada fue verdad.
Besos falsos de tu boca,
juramentos, ambiciones,

mentirosa, mentirosa.
Todo lo que me has hecho pasar,
penas, llanto,

English:

How much I loved you! I can say that I never
will love another woman as you.
Youth will never return
and I can kiss goodbye to the ambition.
What a time, fleeting time that is no longer,
I met all the value of a passion.
How many happy love phrases I heard.
that I always believed, submissive and faithful..

The caresses of your hands,
your words of tenderness,
those left a cruel bitterness,
because nothing was true.
False kisses of your lips,
oaths, ambitions,
killed my illusions,
without any pity.

But, for the evil that you did to me,
my sad soul just says,
liar, liar.
Everything you've put me through,
sorrows, crying,
with another person you will pay.

You’ll  find somebody who will  pretend love
and then yes, you'll love without lying,
you will be the one crying at the end.
You always will remember me at the suffering,
* your heart will bleed when thinking ,
in all the wrong you did to my dreams
and even in the dying, in the dying, you'll look
to the eyes of the ghost of your betrayal. *

* This part of the lyrics is not sung in this version, but it illustrates the brutal hatred of the protagonist.

Tango Talks!    (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… Y nosotros en ella / Behind every tango is a story... And we in it)

Escuchemos...

How do we react to the comeback of the person who betrayed our love? Will we so sure of our actions? Will we be consistent with what we thought? Hmm... Tango already knew what we were going to do... Let’s listen...

Andáte por Dios
Tango

Castellano:

No sigas hablando, andáte y no vuelvas
¡Quisiera matarte!... Y tus ojos negros
Me miran... no puedo... andáte, por Dios.

Sin embargo...
Y a pesar de lo que has hecho
Siento aquí dentro del pecho
Que me grita el corazón...
¡Por vos...!
Solamente por vos
Nada más que por vos...
He llorado y he sufrido
Porque nadie te ha querido
Nunca tanto como yo...
¡Por vos...!
Nada más que por vos
Que ayer fuiste mi locura,
Por vos siento esta amargura
Que me parte el corazón.

Los días, las noches, las horas amargas
Mordiendo la almohada por no maldecir,
Borracho de celos frente a tu retrato
¡No sabes oh cuánto me has hecho sufrir!

¡No!...
No te vayas todavía,
Dame un beso, vida mía
Después... después, ¡Andáte, por Dios!.

English:

Stop talking, go away and don't come back
In sum, nothing is left between the two,
Or do you pretend to see me on my knees
To see me cry and ask forgiveness a thousand times .
What do you expect to go? If I no longer want you
If neither can I speak , my voice trembles,
I wish I kill you!... And your black eyes
Are looking at me... I can’t... Oh my God, go away.

But nevertheless...
And despite what you've done
I feel here inside the chest
That my heart screams...
For you...!
Only for you
Nothing more than for you...
I've cried and I've been suffering
Because nobody loved you
Never as much as I...
For you...!
Nothing more than for you
That yesterday you were my madness,
For you I feel this bitterness
That breaks my heart.

Days, nights and the bitter hours
Biting the pillow not to curse ,
In front of your portrait, drunk of jealousy
You do not know oh how much you made me suffer!
Now you come to see me. Why this punishment!
Don't you see your forgetfulness is unforgivable?
Your smile, your lips, that I kissed a thousand times
Everything drives me crazy. Oh my God, go away!

But no!...
Don’t go yet,
Give me a kiss, my love
Then... then… Oh my God, go away!.

Extraordinaro!

Vida Mía (My Love)

Tango - 1933

Music: Osvaldo Fresedo
Lyrics: Emilio Fresedo
Orchestra: Osvaldo Fresedo
Singer: Héctor Pacheco
This performance: Buenos Aires, Sep 21 1952 - Odeon 55560 MAI-768

Curated and Translated  by Luigi Seta

Being away and seeing her image everywhere along  the road...

Tango Talks!

"Vida Mía" is a romantic tango song, well to the style of Osvaldo Fresedo, it  was the most popular of those who wrote its author. It debuted in 1933 and was first sung by the singer Roberto Ray. Virtually all the singers who joined Fresedo orchestra sang "Vida Mia", it was an inevitable tango in the repertoire of the celebrated director.

Carlos Gardel was very close to sing "Vida Mía", but was not possible for a union conflict. In the 30s, authors and composers have been divided in Buenos Aires. There were two companies that claimed the right of representation and collection, causing very annoying situations. It came to be that the music users often do not know whom to pay and then they did not, or was paid only to the first coming. Finally, both groups united to promote the birth of SADAIC (Argentine Society of Authors and Composers.

Another much later anecdote,  puts together Gardel with "Vida Mía". That tango and not "Por Una Cabeza " had been chosen for the film Scent of a Woman (directed in 1992 by Martin Brest). When producers asked SADAIC permission to use the Fresedo tango, the cachet set by the heirs of the composer was very excessive. So they opt for the Gardel’s tango, whose copyright had passed into the public domain after the 50 year pass of the death of the singer and Le Pera.

There is also a live recording -taken in 1956 at the Rendez Vous boite- in which the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie improvises while Fresedo, without singer, plays 'Vida Mía". It was the Buenos Aires of the self-proclaimed Liberating Revolution that overthrew Juan Perón and marked the beginning of the end of the Golden Age period of tango. And in that scene came to Argentina Dizzy Gillespie, one of the biggest names in jazz and the world music history.

Vida Mía

Castellano:

Siempre igual es el camino
que ilumina y dora el sol...
Si parece que el destino
más lo alarga
para mi dolor.

Y ese verde suelo,
donde crece el cardo,
Y lejos toca el cielo
cerca de mi amor...
Y de vez en cuando un nido
para que lo envidie yo.

Vida mía, lejos más te quiero.
Vida mía, piensa en mi regreso,
Sé que el oro
no tendrá tus besos
Y es por eso que te quiero más.
Vida mía,
hasta apuro el aliento
acercando el momento
de acariciar felicidad.
Sos mi vida
y quisiera llevarte
a mi lado prendida
y así ahogar mi soledad.

Vida mía, yo quisiera llevarte a mi lado prendida y así ahogar mi soledad.

English:

Always the same path
illuminated and gilded by the sun...
If it seems that fate
lengthens it more
for my pain.

And this green field,
where the thistle grows,
far touching the sky
near my love...
And occasionally a nest
appears for my envy.

My love, being far... more I love you.
My love, think of my return,
I know that gold
will not have your kisses
And that's why I love you more.
My love,
I am rushing my pace
to approach the time
of caressing happiness.
You are my life
and I would like to take you
here close to  my side
to drown my loneliness.

My love, I would like to take you here close to my side to drown my loneliness

That meeting had two young assistants (one for each "side") that will stand out in the future: Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin.

Adiós, Corazón (Goodbye, Sweetheart)

Tango - 1957

Music: Lalo Etchegoncelay
Lyrics: Héctor Sapelli
Orchestra: Fulvio Salamanca
Singer: Armando Guerrico
This performance: Buenos Aires, Nov 29 1957, Odeon 22716

Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!

And realizing that the other person will never be for us, we had the mettle to not accommodate rancor and move on, but accompanied with a pain that deeply is piercing our souls...  Again tango gave us its point of view.....

“Adiós, Corazón”, the song that launched the Salamanca’s signature sound

Adiós, Corazón recorded on Nov 29 1957 by Fulvio Salamanca Orchestra with Armando Guerrico on vocals has an interesting story behind it. This was the song that became the “sound” of Fulvio Salamanca.

Fulvio had faithfully been D'Arienzo’s piano player from 1940  to 1957 when he decided to set up his own orquesta with bandoneonist Eduardo Corti. They had their debut on Radio Splendid such was the respect they were held in. The orquesta were still searching for their signature sound cautious not to sound like D’Arienzo which is what everyone would be listening for and they knew it. They spent long hours trying to work on a unique sound.

It was at a dinner party during this time, where Armando Guerrico happened to be singing casually this song “Adiós, Corazón”. Fulvio heard him sing and the song and immediately set about trying to find the authors who were unregistered on SADAIC (Argentina) and in Uruguay. Luckily Fulvio had a lot of friends there and after several phone calls to Montevideo they were tracked down and agreement reached.

Fulvio did the arranging on the song and added the violins at the start to the score and suddenly had the new signature sound. He also had his key singer Armando Guerrico and along with “Mano Cruel” and “Adios Corazon” were the first two sides of the  Armando Guerrico cut with Fulvio Salamanca in the Odeon recording studio.

Also for the first year of this orchestra the violinist was none other than the legendary Elvino Vardaro who had been persuaded to join by Conti.

Adiós, Corazón

Castellano:

Adiós corazón...
te decían los muchachos.
Adiós corazón...
aquel día dije yo.
Y comenzaste a reir
porque la frase te agradó
y por las calles te seguí
diciendo así, con emoción:
Adiós corazón...
si usted quiere conversamos;
soñé con su amor...
quiero ver qué hay de verdad.
Y mi presencia te turbó:
quedaste casi sin hablar
cuando dijiste con tu adiós:
¡Hasta mañana, corazón!

Adiós corazón...
de tu mano hoy va otra mano.
Adiós corazón...
quién pudiera ser tu amor.
¡Que nunca tengas que llorar!
¡Como he llorado por tu amor!
cuando dijiste con tu adiós:
¡Hasta mañana, corazón!
English:

Goodbye, sweetheart...
All the boys had told you.
Goodbye Sweetheart...
I said that day.
And you started to smile
because you liked the phrase
and then I followed through streets
So saying like that, with emotion :
Goodbye, Sweetheart...
if you want we can talk;
I dreamed with your love ...
I want to see what is truth.
And my presence troubled :
You stood  almost without speaking
when you said your goodbye:
Until tomorrow, sweetheart...

Goodbye sweetheart...
today your hand goes with another hand.
Goodbye Sweetheart...
who could be your love.
May you never have to mourn!
As I have wept for your love!
when you said with your goodbye:
Until tomorrow, sweetheart...

Bravo!

The sad story of this tango is excellently performed, realistically, in a sincere dramatic manner and with restrained passion that almost gets out through their pores. Superb!
