Esta Noche De Luna (This Moonlit Night)

Tango - 1943 Music: José García / Graciano Gómez Lyrics: Héctor Marcó Orchestra: Osvaldo Pugliese Singer: Jorge Maciel This performance: Buenos Aires, Feb-9-1955 - Record Odeon 51815 20442 Curated and Translated by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks! (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

When love fills us inside, without letting not even breathe, it gives a world of shelter and happiness... A bewitchment that takes us to deep and unknown landscapes from which we do not want to wake up. We would do everything not to lose those illusions... our life if necessary. Tango shows it this way... and what a way!

Acerca del Autor de la Letra / About the Author of the Lyrics

He was introduced to Carlos Di Sarli by Cayetano Puglisi. Di Sarli praised so much "Alma mía" and he already knew "Callejón" and "Que Nunca Me Falte". Di Sarli asked if he wanted to work with him, so hey went to a bar in Tucumán and Maipú and the Maestro began humming a tango; Marcó immediately said the name: "It will be called "Corazón". Roberto Rufino recorded it on December 11, 1939 and, fifteen years later, Mario Pomar, on February 2, 1955.

After the first recording, while in the studio, Di Sarli left the piano and said: "Congratulations. If you want, we can be partners from now on”. From that followed "Alma Mía" that had done with Diego Centeno, and "En Un Beso La Vida", with music of Di Sarli, recorded with Rufino both.

Luego siguieron el vals “Rosamel”, el tango “Bien Frappé”, “Nido Gaucho”, “Cuando El Amor Muere” , “Acuérdate De Mí”, “Esta Noche De Luna” , “Tú El Cielo y Tú” , “Tu Intimo Secreto”, “Tus Labios Me Dirán” y muchísimos otros exitos.

Then they followed the waltz "Rosamel", the tango "Bien Frappé", "Nido Gaucho", "Cuando El Amor Muere", "Acuérdate De Mí", "Esta Noche De Luna", "Tú El Cielo y Tú”, “Tu Intimo Secreto", “Tus Labios Me Dirán" and many other successes.

As it can be seen, Marcó was the emblematic lyricist of Carlos Di Sarli. He was a simple poet but very sensitive to human behavior, a good painter of the human character, with direct verses, implying characters and everyday situations.

Esta Noche De Luna

Castellano:

Acércate a mi
y oirás mi corazón
contento latir
como un brujo reloj.
La noche es azul,
convida a soñar,
ya el cielo ha encendido
su faro mejor.
Si un beso te doy,
pecado no ha de ser;
culpable es la noche
que incita a querer.
Me tienta el amor,
acércate ya,
que el credo de un sueño
nos redimirá.

Corre, corre barcarola,
por mi río de ilusión.
Que en el canto de las olas
surgirá mi confesión.

Soy una estrella en el mar
que hoy detiene su andar
para hundirse en tus ojos.
Y en el embrujo
de tus labios muy rojos,
por llegar a tu alma
mi destino daré.
Soy una estrella en el mar
que hoy se pierde al azar
sin amor ni fortuna.
Y en los abismos
de esta noche de luna,
sólo quiero vivir,
de rodilla a tus pies,
para amarte y morir.

*Acércate a mi
y oirás mi corazón
contento latir
como un brujo reloj.
Mi voz te dirá
Palabras de miel
que harán de tu pecho
fuego encender.
El canto del mar
repite en su rumor
qué noche de luna,
qué noche de amor.
Dichoso de aquel
que pueda decir,
yo tengo un cariño
qué dulce es vivir.

Corre, corre barcarola,
que la luna se escondió.*
English:

Come close to me
And you will hear my heart
Happy to beat
Like a witch watch.
The night is blue,
Invites to dream,
Already the sky has ignited
Its better lighthouse.
If I give you a kiss,
Is not to be a sin;
Guilty is the night
Which incites to love.
Love tempts me,
Come now,
That the creed of a dream
Will redeem us.

Run, run, little ship,
For my dream's river.
That in the waves’ song
My confession will come.

I am a star in the sea
Which today halts its walk
To sink into your eyes.
And in the spell
Of your very so red lips,
To reach your soul
I will give my destiny.
I am a star in the sea
Which today is lost at random
Without love or fortune.
And in the abysses
Of this moonlit night,
I just want to live,
Knee to your feet,
To love you and die.

*Come close to me
And you will hear my heart
Happy to beat
Like a witch watch.
My voice will tell you
Honey words
That will do from your chest
Fire to ignite.
The song of the sea
Repeats in its rumor
What a moonlit night,
What a night of love.
Happy of that one
That can say,
I have a darling
How sweet it is to live.

Run, run, little ship,
That the moon already hid.*

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Escuchemos.

When somebody leave us, we must go through life with our sadness on our backs learning in the cruelest way that everything is irremediable and that we only have the petty comfort of lying in our dreams to live again. Tango intuits and describes it this way. Hard learning. Let's listen.

Acerca del Cantor / About the Singer

When you listen to Floreal Ruiz you get the sensation that the singer does it so naturally and spontaneously that he seems to be sitting in a chair conversing informally, and the notes emerge from his throat without any effort. The timbre and the “coloratura” of his voice are cotidian sounds, there are no stridencies or false resources, he does it in the most difficult way... the simple way.

He was undoubtedly a subtle, delicate singer of an excellent diction that allows to understand not only the letter but also its drama. His son Floreal Ruiz Jr. tells:  "One of the secrets of why my father interpreted the lyrics so especially - apart from the technical aspect of the imposition of the voice - was that he was concerned to know details of the motivation that the author had in conceiving them. Many times he went personally to observe the places that the lyricists indicated as the site of the original inspiration."

It was one of the great voices of the forties, and paradoxically, its definitive recognition was achieved later over the years, not in his moment of fullness when he integrated the orchestra of Aníbal Troilo. This was due to two reasons. First, because in the 1940s many singers of an exceptional level emerged. Second, because he had to replace Francisco Fiorentino in of Pichuco’s  orchestra and perform alongside the successful Alberto Marino, who was the singer in fashion.

Floreal Ruiz was also a lyricist and composer, in some cases in collaboration with others and recorded a total of 148 tangos with the orchestras of José Otero, Alfredo De Angelis, Francisco Rotundo, José Basso, Luis Stazo, Osvaldo Requena, Jorge Dragone and Raúl Garello, on the Odeón, RCA Victor, Pampa, Music Hall, Microphone and Alannicky labels.

Admired by the new tango generations, he was the model of a way to feel and to interpret tango.

La Noche Que Te Fuiste

Castellano:

A veces,

English:

Sometimes,
when in dreams your image appears,
radiant and fleeting as a ray of sun,
I feel your hands warming mine
tremulous and cold ... and you speak of your love!
then slowly your spirit appears,
subtle cooing of an old song,
the one you sang when you were mine,
a feverish ghost, who walks away mocking me.

The night you left me
(sadder than any)
the moon suddenly paled
and my loneliness became grayer...
The rain hitting my anguish on the window
and the wind murmuring: She will never comeback.

The night you left me
snowed on my dullness
and a cold breath
wrapped up all things...
My dreams and my youth
they fell dead with your farewell...
The night you left me
my heart went away...

*Stronger than your forgetfulness,
the time and the distance,
are determined, tenacious with my desolation,
the remorse of the whole past
all my tragic and mocking past!
That is why when in dreams your image looms large
and you sing that old song,
I then become again the one of those days,
radiant and happy as a ray of sunshine.*

* This part of the lyrics is not sung by Floreal Ruiz, but it illustrates the meaning of the tango message.

This performance: Buenos Aires, June 6 1958 - Recording Company: Disco Nacional Odeon

Curated and Translated  by Luigi Seta

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

There are times when we have no hesitation in recognizing true love, which will change our lives forever. This time the tango does not walk halfway to say it, being forbidden to say "I love you" and not showing it at every moment... When we want to be prisoners of love!

Acerca de la Orquesta / About the Orchestra
Fulvio Salamanca

He was one of the great figures of the golden age of tango, instrumentalist of remarkable handling of the piano, by its innate syncopated rhythmic sense that reached high heights in the orchestra of Juan D'Arienzo, to which it was incorporated in 1940, when he still had not turned 20.

He performed with absolute ease the instrument, at the age of 12 he was already a piano teacher. D'Arienzo discovers him on a tour of the Cordoba province, making him go down to Buenos Aires to test his possible entry in the orchestra that was the more successful at that time.

What was remarkable in Salamanca was not only his youth, but when he sat at the piano of the orchestra, his ability to retain in his head all the tones, the solos, the marking and the conjunction with the "fueyes" (bandoneons) and the violins of the orchestra. Fulvio, little by little developed his own style, within the marked "milonguero" march of D'Arienzo, so required by the dancers.

Carpe Diem!

He left 380 recordings with D'Arienzo, some anthologies for which those that totally passionate followed the beat on the dancefloor.  In 1957 decided to become independent, radically changing his style, putting him in the antipodes of Juancito. Why this change, after being his pianist for 17 years? Revenge? The story will tell... Now let’s enjoy your music including the unmatched variations of Elvino Vardaro, the best violinist of all time. Carpe Diem!

Bomboncito

Castellano:

Llegaste a mí con tu risa cantarina,
tu amor me hizo fuerte y me dio fe.

Dejame
que te diga despacito
bomboncito... bomboncito...
dueña de mi corazón.
Una vez más mi emoción
repetirá la canción
milagro de tu amor
y de mi amor.
Dejame
que te diga despacito,
bomboncito... bomboncito...
dueña de mi corazón.

Cómo decirte lo mucho que te quiero,
que vivo tan solo por tu amor...
Así da gusto sentirse prisionero,
si es cárcel tu abrazo arrobador.

Dejame
que te diga despacito
bomboncito... bomboncito...
dueña de mi corazón.
English:

You came to me with your singing laughter,
your love made me strong and gave me faith.
All dark nights of my life
shone in the light of your love.

That's why your limpid gaze ties me,
And my eagerness to wonder stays in you.
Cause your kisses sweeten my journey,
my little sweetie, I only can say to you.

Let me
let me tell you slowly
my little sweetie... my little sweetie...
owner of my heart.
Once again my excitement
will repeat the song
miracle of your love
and of my love.
Let me
let me tell you slowly,
my little sweetie... my little sweetie...
owner of my heart.

How to tell you how much I love you,
that I live only for your love...
It feels so good to feel like a prisoner,
if the jail is your rapturous embrace.

Let me
let me tell you slowly
my little sweetie... my little sweetie...
owner of my heart.

Tango Talks!  (Detrás de cada tango hay una historia… / Behind every tango there is a story...)

Like other tangos that were originally conceived in other rhythms, like El Reloj (bolero), Merceditas (chamamé), etc., Duerme Mi Amor was an instant success at the end of the Golden Age.

"Dors, Mon Amour" was the winning song in the 1958 Eurovision Song Contest. Performed in French by André Claveau representing France, the song was the first entrance sung by a male soloist to win the contest.

Bueno... ¡Tango al fin!   Escuchemos…

The original song is a lullaby from the singer to his lover. He tells her to sleep, while he reflects on her love and the power of the night. But when converted to tango, the author of the lyrics, Alberto Laureano Martínez changes the sense, converted now to a profound apology to his sweetheart, after having betrayed her. Oh Well... Tango it is!   Let's listen...

Duerme Mi Amor
Tango Arrangement

Castellano:

Yo le mentí...
A tu vida que fue todo amor,
Pobre copo de nieve que al sol
En agüita quedó.

Duerme mi amor...
Que en tu sueño mejor, está Dios,
Convirtiendo en dulzura el dolor
Que mi boca te dio.

Déjame ser...
El amor que tu sueño buscó,
Y un rosario de besos será
Mi mejor oración.

Duerme mi amor...
Que tu barco de sueños tendrá,
Con sus velas abiertas al mar,
Una nueva ilusión.

English:

I lied...
To your life that was all love,
Poor snowflake that exposed to sun
Was reduced to water.

Sleep my Love...
That in your dream, there is God,
Turning the pain into sweetness
That my mouth gave you.

Let me be...
The love that your dream sought,
And a rosary of kisses will be
My best prayer.

Sleep my Love...
That your dream's boat will have,
With its sails open to the sea,
A new emotion.
